My 98 accord 4cyl 5spd starting stalling immediately at startup and may do this 5 or 6 times before idling. There is no check engine light. Car was stored for 6 months and started immediately and has since developed this intermittent problem.

 

Start simple with diagnosis. Air-fuel-spark.

Check the fuel pump first. Close the doors and windows and turn the key to the On position. The fuel pump will make a whirring noise priming the fuel lines. Start the car to clear the lines, then repeat a few times. If it works every time, it's probably not a fuel problem.

Check the air filter. This one's easy.

Next, do a spark test. Pull out one of your spark plug wires, plug in an old spark plug, and ground it against the valve cover before having someone start the car. If it's sparking in a normal, rhythmic pattern, ignition is probably fine. You should also check for oil in your spark plug tubes. The seals tend to go bad, and when a spark plug gets flooded with oil, it obviously can't light. (I only thought of this because I'm fixing this problem in my friend's Civic this afternoon.)
