Good Aftermarket Intake Filter?
I have an eBay intake currently with a cheap intake filter on it now. I know it wont do anything hp related for my D17, but what is a good filter to run as far as filtering is concerned, because I'm noticing that my this eBay filter is letting lots of crap through. Ive heard Apexi filters are pretty good. Any suggestions? Thanks ya'll

Looks like the Apexi and K&N are the two best, based on filter material. (no surprise there

From what I read, Weapon-R filters are Polyurethane foam, which is the same material as the HKS filters used in the test linked above. They received a "Very Poor" filter rating.

Filter provides maximum airflow with the protection of high quality dense Poly Urethane Foam.

Looks like my last post wasn't well recieved, well, I don't claim my knowledge base to be flawless but no ones' is.
A few companies other than HKS and Weapon-R use polyurathane foam as their air filter substrate, including Mugen and Spoon (although Spoon changed their filter designs recently I think). The reason HKS filters test poorly is that they're super low density with big air pockets, maximizing air flow and power gains while sacrificing engine protection, not to smart. The people I've spoken to who have weapon-r filters all say the foam is very high density and have reported clean intakes and oil while running them.
I'd love to see an independant filtration test using a Weapon-R filter, but I can't find one. There's no way I would buy a Weapon-R intake manifold for my K20, I know it's junk, that's simple to empiracally measure based on dyno results. So, i agree with you, they make some junk products, but I'd like to see more info on the filters.
On a side note, that filtration test was done in 1999, I'm sure the design of those filters have evolved in the past decade for better or worse. That's important to keep in mind when referencing it.

Good points, MindBomber.
I'd like to see a test done with all "popular" filters, even the no-name ebay stuff. It would be even better if they were all available on one site so that we could just post a link to it when people ask these questions. (and/or add it to the FAQ's) Otherwise it's going to take a bit of searching and putting together a list of references. You up to the challenge?
Now, were the tests actually done in 1999, or did they just source parts of their online article from a magazine that was printed in 1999? The way they word it, it doesn't sound like a case of the ol' "copy and paste" method, but perhaps only sourcing some of the info and adding it to their test results. If that makes any sense.
Just for arguments sake.. they (HKS) do claim to have made changes to the filter. Can't tell if it's any different than the filter they used in the test, though. They both refer to their "multi layer" design.

Also new for the Super Mega Flow Reloaded intake series is a new filter element that is constructed from three layers of different density dry polyurethane foams. This 3-layer triple density dry filter element provides improved filtration plus greater airflow compared to factory intake systems.
