safety question requarding seatbelts/harnesses.
I got a set of 4pt harnesses and a harness bar that i planned on using in my eg hatch. I have del sol seats. I've heard people say to keep stock belts until you get a cage? is this true? how unsafe are harnesses without cages? or do you think it will be okay? all input appreciated ht! thanks!
A "4pt harness" isn't a race harness.
There is also a lot of concern with "harness bars", and their safety in a crash.
Since you mention no brands, how could anyone tell you how safe it is or isn't?
You should also wait more than 12 minutes before bumping the thread...
A harness is unsafe without a fixed back race seat, due to risk of submarining under it. Whether or not the car has a cage is irrelevant.
A fixed back seat is dangerous without a cage / rollbar.
If this is for auto-x, it's fine. If it's for the street, it's probably illegal. If it's for track, I certainly would recommend against it.

Sorry for bumping my thread in 12 minutes. It's for street use. Thanks for the info though =] Car is already inspected, and cops dont say anything about modded interior in my area. So would you not recommend doing it for a street car? I understand safety when it comes to a track car. My drift car has a cage and 5pt harness. I just wanted to know if this would be okay for a street car. I'm not putting a cage in it. If you would not recommend it then I'll just keep stock seat belts.
If it's just a street car, why put a "harness bar" and harness in it to begin with?
And next time you might want to search first, but since I remember the thread I'll just leave this here:

Harness bar in a street car is not dangerous to you. Only to people riding in the backseat. And harnesses are more safe than a standard belt if they wasn't then the nhra would allow stock honda belts in cars that do 300+ in the quarter mile.
As for leaving the stock seatbelts in yes I recommend it. I have harnesses in my evo which I dd and its pointless to always ride with harnesses so I left the stock seatbelts in to wear on the street. Not to mention my harnesses are mounted under the rear seat at the rear buckle mounting position. This allows me to remove the shoulder straps through the holes in the recaros and lay them under the seat so rear passengers don't have to straddle the harness

I don't have back seats, weight reduction yo! No, im kidding. They weren't in there when i bought them. And i don't need to pack a bunch of people in my car so not wasting money on getting a set. but thanks man. And thanks everyone else for the input!
'99-00 Civic, Sparco seats and belts, hard frontal impact (on the street). Passenger was ejected. Pretty self-explanatory.
The reason you want to keep your stock 3 point seat belt on a street car is because in case of a rollover the roof will cave in and the seat belt will allow your body to move so your head can get out of the way. A racing harness will keep you in tight and then you're SOL and that is why you should have a cage or at least a roll bar to use it.
^doesnt look very real either. I read through that link completely and im with the people who say that bar is a fake piece of junk ebay unit and is what the owner gets for buying from ebay. No sparco bar has pivot points sorry, but that's major fail.
Please provide another link with a real harness bar from a company who has done thousands of hours of r&d developing it that has failed like that please.
Oh and it also appears to me the harnesses are mounted to the floor directly behind the front seat which probably helped the bar fail which it specifically says not to do in the instructions. They should be mounted at the most 30* angle or you run the risk of compressing your spine.
Im also willing to be both parties in that car were not fully restrained. Meaning the harnesses were not sinched down holding them in place like they are meant to and when the front impact happened they flew forward passenger was ejected due to harness being loose and the driver suddenly slammed into the harness bending the bar.
But hey who really knows since the link provided says in plain english it was not his car but someone he knew so its second hand not first hand experience and the person who owned the car doesn't think the bar cause the passengers ejection.
So please someone explain how harnesses and a harness bar can be more deadly than being safe on the street when these same harnesses are used in drag racing, autox, circle track, and every racing scene there is. If it can save someones life going 300 mph and flipping end over end at the end of a strip and hitting a sand trap then how is it dangerous for someone to use them on the street where the most u may see is a 80mph impact on the freeway?
As I stated before I usually don't use my harnesses in my car on the street that's y I advised to keep the stock ones. I however don't feel it would be dangerous to use them like people are trying to say.

I can kinda see your point champ, however, when sitting in a racing seat the head rest is usually above your head. Im not saying that will keep the roof from coming down in a rollover, but regardless of it being a harness keeping you in place and you saying a regular seat belt will allow u to move. That is a false statement the factory seatbelt is designed as well as a harness to keep you from moving in an accident whether it be a rollover. And if the roof caves in enough to break the seat to come lower then therefore that would allow more room for a person to move who was wearing harnesses or a regular seatbelt.
I agree that roll cages roll bars harness bars are pointless on the street but labiling them as dangerous I don't see it happening other than maybe the cage since you can bust your head on it. If its approved for high speed and major impacts such as going from 200 to 0 in the blink of an eye or flipping 50 times down a track then a 40 to 50 on average mph wreck then harnesses and harness bars are overkill.

I remember that thread. Nothing conclusive was ever proven about the pic provided as far as brand and install. However some other good arguements were provided to make you think. Still have my harness bar though.
I'm a believer in "all or nothing" here. The total system (seat, belts, rollover protection) needs to be looked at, not individual pieces.
If you want a harness, you should also have a fixed back seat, which means you should also have at least a rollbar, which means you don't need a harness bar since you can just add a cross tube to the rollbar.
A properly done harness is perfectly safe on the street, as long as you finish the rest of the system too, they're just illegal in the US (single button release mandated by law, which no real race harness has).
But, safety is never an absolute. Take the risks you're comfortable with, just be certain to consider the passengers you might have in the car when doing any modifications.
