Default Pistons back in my block question.

I have an H22A euro-r thats been disassembled. If I use my ring compressor can I just reinsert the pistons back into their original cylinders without any compression issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you have gone so far as to pull the motor apart why don't you take the extra time/money to get the cylinder walls honed and buy new rings? What you are suggesting may work but if it doesn't you will need to pull the motor apart again....

Depending on the condition of the walls, you can probably get by without a hone on the FRM, but you should put a new set of rings in there. At the very least, grab a cheap set of Nippon rings off Ebay.

Cylinder walls are perfect. My only concern was gapping the piston rings........ I don't know how yet. I've googled and searched for the proper tools needed to perform this but everyone saying different things. But trust me I do not mind getting my hands dirty and rebuilding it myself. Just kinda hard without guidance.

When I bought new rings for my build, I checked them all per the Helms manual, and they were all in spec, so I just had to install them, and line the gaps up properly and install the pistons.

I did not hone my block, but did new rings, and so far I only have about 3-400 miles on it, but no smoking. Even had it at the track once already.

So for this motor can't I just order some new rings from Honda. But of course for a 5thgen lude 98+?

I would use honda rings personally. No need to hone unless the walls are scarred.

Preciate the comment. Thats been my plan for a while now. Just didn't know for sure wheter or not it was capable of holding compression without a hone.

As long as the rings are within spec and there is no visible scarring of the walls what raised doubts it wouldnt hold compression?

I would like to know the response to this too, fairly new to Hondas myself. Trying to learn the does and don'ts. I have heard some people say you have to hone the bores every time regardless and others say as long as they aren't damaged you are good to go with rings as long as they are good quality. Then I also heard someone say only use Honda rings if you hone, if you don't use aftermarket. I don't know what to believe.

I've just been told by others to "make sure you hone or it will blow". I wanted to get some truth to the matter from another H series person.

You can always get a flex-hone (ball hone) and just hook it up to your drill and dip it in honing oil. Best cheapest way to get your cylinders ready for new rings without sending it out to a machine shop.

Does this work with the FRM sleeves? I have heard of people doing this with iron sleeves....I was under the impression that the FRM sleeves required special stones?

actually my bad your right a ball hone won't work for this type of cylinder wall. But they do not need to be honed if there is no significant scratches down the cylinder wall.

you could re-use the rings if you haven't changed anything and it didn't have any compression problems prior. but again, its your choice as to if that's suitable for your goals.

That'll work. There no scratches or imperfections in the walls. My plans are to go with the Mahle pistons but use brand new honda rings.

If the scratches are deep then you'll need to bore it out to get rid of those scratches. But if they're not that bad and has slight catch to your finger nails then you'll be able to just get it honed out and get yourself a set of new rings.

Be sure that the shop knows what they're doing though because these FRM liners aren't like others. Takes only one special hone to get it done.

well the scratches by my judgement aren't really deep, and oh yea.... i'm building this motor in my garage (can't really afford the machine shop right now), i have all the tools necessary tho... and what kind of hone do i need.

Also what do think about type s pitons and rods, pickin em up next friday...

Which crankshaft will you be using with those rods?
