Default 99 Civic DX - headlight and tach questions

Just picked this up today.

99 DX 107K miles, 5-speed, 2 owners. First owner was a women in his 50s. The guy I bought it from was in his 50s also. He bought it because he does a lot of highway driving. He put 50K on it in 3 years. He bought a newer car, and his 17 year old son refused to learn to drive a manual trans. He did the timing belt, all 3 other belts, waterpump, and seals last year.

Anyway, the headlights are HORRIBLE faded. I was thinking of picking up one of those polishing kits. Anyone have good luck with those? Also, anyone want to recommend a nice bright bump for the housings?

Also, the car has no tach. WTF? Can you swap in a different cluster from a different model?

The lights really aren't difficult to fix. There are several right up's, and headlight restore kits work pretty well.

I think it was 3m, or something but my friend and I did his dad's and it worked great.

The cluster is a piece of cake. Simply buy any 96-00 cluster with a tach, remove yours and install the new the one.

As said it is easy to swap out the cluster for one with a tach. http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?82295
Use that it is under the FAQ section. This shows you how you can keep your spedometer with the correct milage. I did this on mine after buying a cluster with higher milage. Hope this helps. And use the FAQ section, it has saved me from having to ask a question many times.

Auto's don't either. I have one, and it didn't.

And, if you actually read the post, you'll see he has a 99. Your headlights are of no use to him.

I appreciate your advice, but this car won't be modded. I have a 89 mustang putting down 450+ to the rear tires. That's the fun car. I have a civic due to my 40 mile drive to work. I've had two prior in the last 7 years, and they have treated me well.

buy headlight or use a polishing kit. yes they do work but will need to be redone every so often. i just bought a meguires headlight kit and it work great. any 96-00 ex,lx,hx are all plug and play. 99-00 clusters are plug and play , and also 97-01 crv clusters are plug and play Rare to find a 5 spd cluster though.

But Headlight Restore kit
and a 96-00 (Manual) Instrument cluster with Tachometer will fit and work with no problem.

OMG this car is so fun. It sits so damn low, it's like driving a go-kart. I think the fuel level gauge may not be working. I'll look into that later. I'm fully happy with this purchase.

Yea. You think it feels like a go cart, go pull the PS out and report back

Is it moving around constantly? If so, that is perfectly normal. Our tanks don't have baffles in them, so fuel is always moving around.

Nope, it was on full when I bought it, and still on full 120 miles later. It took 5 gallons to fill up.

oh. In that case, first try and swap the cluster, sense you want a tach anyway.

That was my first thought. I'm a big mustang guy, and mustang's have the same problem, but it's the sender unit, in the tank. I don't know if honda's have a similar setup, but I'm surely not removing the tank to fix this problem. I'll just fill up every 300 miles.

Might as well try the cluster swap first, or just go about 300 miles and then fill up until you can fix the sending unit if that turns out to be your problem. Best of luck to you, keep us updated!

you don't have to pull the tank to get at the pump just the bottom of the back seat there is an access panel under it . the 3m headlight kit works really well. good luck

I have heard of some people having issues with theirs.
My little brother has a 90 mustang, (5.0ho), lol

You have you drop the seat, you simply pull the back seat out, which is very easy.
