Fuel Gauge for 1995 Honda Accord EX
My fuel gauge is acting strange. Some times it reads fine and other times it dropes below E like there is not power to it. Is there a relay or a sending unit that needs to be replaced?
Thanks so much. Love the gen5's

I own a 95 accord v6 also. I am a mechanic and I can tell you from experience that the gauge cluster in these models is known to have a faulty circuit board which causes gauge malfunctions, mainly with the speedometer jumping or intermittently working. I did not have any problems with the fuel gauge but I had to replace the gauge cluster six months ago with a used one due to a short in the circuit board effecting the speedometer. This may or may not be the case with your vehicle but I spent countless hours testing before I figured it out and if all else fails you can get one from e-bay for $100.00 or so. There is a fuel level sending unit separate from the fuel pump unit in the trunk behind the passengers side rear seat. Remove the carpet from the trunk (one plastic black screw in the middle that unscrews, then pry it out),folding the rear seats down is a must! Then you can remove the three screws that hold the metal access cover to the sending unit. There is also a 10mm bolt that needs to be removed in front of the access cover for the ground wire(its best to use a wrench because the plastic trim makes using a socket impossible, make sure it is tight before removing it could be your problem). Disconnect the gray connector near the access cover. Now you should be able to push the rubber seal around the harness through the access cover and remove it to gain access to the fuel level sending unit. The connector is under a rubber cover (check for looseness, frayed wires, dirt). It never hurts to spray the connectors with electrical parts cleaner just to be sure. You can now remove the unit by removing the 10mm bolts, make sure you clean any dirt off from the seal area and make a reference mark so you can line it up where it was when you reinstall it. Just reverse the steps for assembly. Hope this helps, I replaced the fuel pump in mine last week and checked the sender, it takes about an hour max to remove and reinstall it.
Thanks you so much for the reponse. sounds like a fun project. About as fun as replacing the VSS. Those are some great instrucitons. My kid will love taking apart the back of the car.
At this point the fuel guage is working properly again. I am going to see if it only happends when I put gass in the tank or if the fuel gets to a lower level.
I have a problem kind of like this, mine will occasionally work but spends most of its time in the past full position. It works once in a while and will let me know how much gas is in the tank. Seems like it works mostly at 1/4-1/2 and 3/4 tank.
Funny I have not had the problem with the fuel guage except that one time but it does act strangly right after I fill the tank up for the 1st 50 miles or so then everything seems normal. I will just count my blessings and keep going until it breakes all together then figure it out.
You're better off getting another cluster and just swap it in. That's the easiest solution I can think of. My speedo did the same thing and I just got tired and replaced it.

Craigslist or a junkyard. From all the posts I've been reading, they all say it's the printed circuit board that is the culprit. Good luck. By the way, if you decide to just get the fuel gauge, try not to touch the needle. It's very sensitive and vibration can mess it up. Good luck.
