Default Can this bushing be replaced without removing the rack?

I have play on the passenger side of my rack (not the tierod) Wondering if anyone has ever replaced this (#10 in the picture) bushing to correct this issue if so did it work? and how do you go about replacing the bushing. Do you have to remove the rack? If i do i might as well replaced the whole rack but i would rather save the money for other things.

its possible, but i highly recommend taking the rack out. it will be much easier.

thats my experience from doing it either way.

thinking that you "might as well replace the whole rack" is not logical. #10 is really the only thing you possibly need to replace on the "whole rack" since its manual. buying a "rebuilt" rack is pointless because that bushing is really all thats necessary.

well does the rack have to be disassembled to replace that bushing?

no.

you need to take the inner tie rod out. in order to do that, you need to flatten the lock washer tabs. the issue is getting around all the other stuff and then accessing the two plastic buttons to press in and pull it out. its just not easy and frustrating. you need to rely on having a bunch of miscellaneous tools to pry it out.

its possible. ive done it a few times. i wont try any more to do it in the car, its overall easier and you can do a better job with it out of the car.

If you want to see how to rebuild the entire rack, my son and I documented our Quaife upgrade here: http://accutach.com/Documents/QuaifeRackUpgrade.pdf

When I did that same job. I took the whole rack out. It will make your life much easier.

I replaced it with the rack in the car (loosen LH bolts, remove RH clamp entirely). I also cut the new bushing at one end and placed it around the rod - no need to remove the tie rod end. It's so frickin tight in there that the cut in one end doesn't compromise the bushing's function at all.

If you go ghetto and cut the bushing, do it at the 12 o'clock position - not in the direction of wheel loading.

thats an interesting way of thinking around the problem, ill give you credit for that. but it still does seem like it will compromise the bushing over time and im not quite sure how you got it out if the big lock washer was in the way. obviously you did, but im just thinking its still probably better just to do it the right way.

well i did it yesterday..took me all of 30 min. took the inners and outers off.turn the drivers side wheel all the way to the right....broke the old bushing as much as i could with a screw driver/pick..then took the drivers side wheel again..and slammed it left and right ..the movement from the rod inside the rack kinda forced the bushing out and it popped out.. dont know if it will work everytime..maybe i just got lucky.
