I heard face plating is great, liberty does it. It's a cheaper solution that seems to last a long time. There is also other parts you can upgrade besides the gears, like gear shift holder (sold by speedfactory).

All that **** is a waste of time and money keep fixing and breaking stock one till you can buy a real tranny.

Or just buy a built tranny before you waste all that time. Alot of guys think just buying a dog box you are good, but there is alot of other parts that you need to upgrade internally or else you're just going to break it anyway. Just figure out how much money you got and decide to either wait or just drop the money on an indistructable transmission.

faceplating the stock gears wont really help his situation. would be nice to go albins helical, in either synchronos or dog. helical might help to be a little easier on the case and a cuff. from what I understand, I haven't done these setups though.

All I know is my car makes pretty good power it traps an average of 155mph and my trans holds I just change **** as it breaks. But I have a pile of trannys so that helps.

Ive heard helical gears pull themselves together. Where as straight cuts dont. So a cuff is necessary with straight cuts. Probably not such a great idea with helical or stocks. But thats just what Ive been told.

The only thing I would waste my money on, is face plates. Then if you start shattering gears left and right, you can save up for a dog box. But thats just my worthless .02.

The only reason to faceplate a gear would be to help with the shift but I really don't see the need for them.

The Face Plating was pretty cool, also with the hand cuff, It doesnt strengthen the gear, It just makes for dog engagment Seems that 700whp Is about the breaking point for the face plating at Full Throttle Shifts, u mit put it in the wrong gear, but u wont miss a gear

I just like the idea of faceplates for quicker shifts, no grinds, no miss, and no synchro replacement.

Faceplating is great for a budget racer like yourself. Constantly pulling the tranny from beat up synchros gets old pretty quickly. You may save some parts by gong with a smaller tire. You have to remember it's still a stock gear though.
If everyone listened to the " just wait until you can afford a tranny" ****, no one would ever race. I can't afford an aftermarket trans, but the money I am winning with my stock gears can help me afford one...

so those were 26" you were running in the last grenada drags? as someone suggested, you should go down to a 24.5" tyre.

I personally run a tilton inline valve on my clutch. Some think it's pointless, but I think it helps soften the shock on the gears while shifting. So if they are going to break it's going to be from heat/constant abuse.

If you saved all the money you spent on face plates everytime you shred a gear you could affors one sooner than you think and if you have a setup that doesn't shred gears and you are still destroying syncros than you have a driving problem.

Not necessarily. If youre revving to 9k+ all the time, smashing gears, thats a TON of abuse for the stock brass to take. Making the synchro slow the gear down from that kind of speed, and all of the time, when it was designed for a daily driver with average 4k RPM shifts, is bound to put some wear on the synchros much faster.

Maybe faster but not fast enough to justify spending that kind of money when u could go get more stock tranny parts for dirt cheap.

The synchros take a beating from high rpm shifts like stated above, I just did some maintenance on my own. I dont have a face plated tranny, but a friend had the setup in his car for a little while.
All of those "dirt cheap" tranny parts I have come across are usually in worse condition than what I have already. Between the shift collars and the dog lugs on the factory gears, its hard to find stuff in good condition. Not everyone is trying to set records on a stock box, some just want to make their setup less of a hassle. I know I can go get a gear stack with ruined dog lugs for $150+/- and have them face plated. Not really that much invested if it lasts for a while.

Thats how I feel. LOL. Just wouldnt mind faceplates when I can afford it. But right now, I like picking up a few trannies for cheap, and having tons of parts laying around to fix it.
