Default Anyone Try Synchromesh Additives for Grinds???

Just started getting a grind shifting into 3rd on a hydro LS trany. I just had the POS apart last year to powder coat the housing and replace all the bearings and seals. The fluid isn't low and it looks fine. I only use Honda gear oil, but I was wondering if anyone has used Royal Purple, Synchromesh, or Amsoil to help with grinds. I know this is just a bandaid for now, but I really don't feel like tearing down the trans right now. Eventually I will throw in the Synchrotech kit. Any help would be appreciated.

Fix it now or it will cost more to fix later.

^^^Well that is good advise. Is Synchrotech the way to go? I am pushing 520 hp to the wheels right now and probably looking for 600 hp in the future. I only want rebuilt that trans once.

With that much power, you should expect failures such as final drive gears breaking, etc... so it's a bit unrealistic to only want to rebuild the trans once.

Synchrotech and MFactory are the way to go though.

You're going to need more than synchros if you never want to touch it again. Regardless how you build it, it will have to be opened up again sometime in the future the that amount of power.

Agreed...Transmissions are maintenance like anything else! With those hp numbers I would go through the trans atleast once a season if not more. It will save you money in the long run. Also as mentioned above, look into getting atleast an aftermarket final drive and an LSD if you don't have one already. MFactory has some great options for both. As far as the grinding, it is probably more than just simply replacing the synchro rings. Check the synchromesh on the gear and the sleeves at a minimum. But at this point I would go through the whole transmission thoroughly...Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like I have been in denial about the whole trans thing. I figured I would have to do the synchros for 3rd as well as the 3-4 gear sleeve. You think I have to do 1st & 2nd as well? And what's up with the final drive? Do those break teeth off or something? BTW I am running a '98 LS trans with (I think) a '99 CTR LSD and final drive.

When you are ready to go through the trans, let me know and I will set you up with the parts you need with a Honda Tech discount. I would definately go with the Pro Series full carbon lined synchros. Plan on some new sleeves as well.

listen to everyone. i just got my car tuned, she got mad power. my trans didnt like the power and the mileage and it started grinding 3rd after 4k rpm and didnt go in at hwy speeds unless i revved a little. i tried synchromesh and it didnt do jack. My trans is currently apart in my basement and im waiting for new 3-4th gear synchros and sleeve

i used this awesome writeup

im going to just do oem type parts. not straight from honda but parts from synchrotech or gearspeed. both roam hondatech and can give discounts. my synchros are not horrible but im going to replace the 3-4th gear but the 3/4 gear sleeve its very noticeable damage. the teeth are rounded over and i think that was the main problem of grinding

^^^ Let me know how it turns out and how much $$ you had to fork out. Looks like I am in the same boat, so I am going to have to make this repair soon. Thanks.
