mini me rough idling no throttle response
i just built a mini me i used a stock a6 bottom end and a z6 top end...it has good compression but when you start it up it idles roughs and hardly makes any power at all. i noticed though i advanced the gear 1 tooth and it kinda ran better should i continue this process? any ideas?
Sounds like you didn't get the timing belt set up correctly.
Also, you may consider getting a cam gear.
The cam/crank timing will be off 1/2 a tooth without it.

no no no just line up your damn marks!if u want to try and degree your camshaft (which is not needed) then ya get the aftermarket sprocket.just advance you ignition timing a lil not alot.the most you will be out is 4 degrees and thats aint **** and itll probibly be advanced.
Mine did the same thing. Your timing belt is off. make sure all the timing marks line up. once you move the belt a tooth, turn the motor over by hand and then check to see if its off or not.
so i dont need to change the cam sprocket....well thats cool so far ive only move it one tooth advance of the up's 12 o clock position and idled a little better not as rough and had a little more power, but still svery sluggish, im going to try moving it one more tooth and see what it does

Didn't mean to confuse you with the cam gear - it will not solve your problem.
Your belt seems several teeth off - should have mentioned that.
However, it is 100% true that your timing will alway be off 1/2 tooth with this head swap.
You don't -NEED- the cam gear, but without it you either rob the low end or the high end from some power depending on how you set the belt (advanced or retarded).
Other posts suggest it's about 7~10hp loss.
I would still consider getting a cam gear just to make it right... your call.

i completely understand, at this point i just would like it to run properly. i havent had a chance to mess with it again yet...but i figured that was the problem..the half a tooth off issue isnt really a big deal at this point as im looking at top end stuff anyway
fixed timing was off quite a bit 3 or 4 teeth retarded or something...anyway it runs much better than i anticpated i set it up one tooth advance and bingo smooth idle and power...it sounds like the valves are ticking a little does anyone know of a piston to valve clearance issue with this and can i adjust it out
