So I have 2 D16A6 transmissions both with bad input shaft bearings.

Transmission 1:
Pulled it apart and replaced the ISB. Put it back together and the transmission (sitting on the shelf) will go into all gears except for reverse. I took the case back apart and now magically it will shift into reverse. When you shift to reverse the 5th gear shift fork wants to go backwards into the bearing at the end of the mainshaft. So it seems to shift fine if the case is apart but put it back together and it doesn't work.

I assumed I must have installed something backwards but after inspection I could not find anything so I tore apart transmission 2 for comparison.

Transmission 2:
Shifted into all gears ok. This transmission has a bad ISB. Then I took apart the case ONLY. I didn't disassemble or touch anything else. But now that the case is apart transmission 2 won't shift into reverse either. Didn't try to put the case back together and retest, too frustrated!

Any ideas?

 

Got it figured out I think. One of the ball bearings in the shift fork assembly was mis-installed.

 

I am having the exact same problem, what ball bearing on the fork are you talking about.. are you talking about the detent with the spring and bolt that holds it down? please help
