Default Hard to start when motor is cold

I have a 99 teg with a b20 vtec. When the car has sat over night or the motor temp is the same as the outside air, the motor cranks for about 3 secs then tries to fire then dies. I'll try a second time...it will fire idle up to about a grand then die. I'll try a 3rd time same result. Finally about the 4th or 5th try it will fire idle up to about a grand then down to about 500 then back to a grand. I'll try to give it gas to keep it going but it acts like it want to fall on it's face. Once the car is warm, I can shut the car off and start it every time without difficulty on the first try. I've replace the dizzy with a crane cam ignition system but I have no idea what to check next. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

I took it to advance auto parts to have them plug it in and they couldn't get it to connect. It kept saying error. I don't know.....I'm really stumped and don't know what to do next.

What's your fuel pressure? Turn key to run and let. the fuel pump run until it shuts off then try to start.

Haven't checked fuel pressure yet and yes the check engine light is on. I figured since I swapped the Ls motor with the b20 vtec some of the plugs I don't use, I figured that's why it's on. But I don't know I'm an idiot when it comes to trouble shooting.

Yes ecu was changed. It came with the complete b20 vtec swap. I have not checked fuel filter. Today was warmer in Indiana. It was about 75 and it barely started on first try. It idled up to about a grand then almost died but caught itself and bumped around from about 300-800 rpm. Its freaking weird. I've heard of cars not starting when it's hot but mine likes hot! Lol

Ok. I appreciate the help. I'll try to get those codes and check for leaks. As far as the plugs..... I just plugged in the plugs that were close to their mate. So I'm not for sure what plugs I'm not using.

well is your ecu chipped and tuned? any regular ecu will NOT work with any frankenstein motor.

Everything came from zero lift and they said it was a p28 that was chipped. So i guess I'll take their word for it??

check your main relay located above the knee bolster, it should click three times,

when you put the key to ii -click
when check engine light goes off - click
when you crank the car- click

one of these clicks isn't working replace it, mine was when the check engine light goes off.

also if you cannot hear it put your hand over the main relay and do the process you will feel a tiny vibration.

also i'd look also into replacing the fuel filter if you have not done so.

i didnt know what zero lift was but a quick google search helped out a lot.

Anyway go back to them and asked what base map is on the ecu and if its tuned for your specific motor, not another motor not your friends motor not there another customers motor that was built the same way for the motor YOU have in your car now. every motor is different. just hit them back up and ask them about the ecu.

OH and find out what the cel codes are!

Ok. I'll call them tomorrow. I tried to have the codes checked again and it showed error again. They tried running it as a 99 teg then 99 si then 98 crv but nothing worked. Hopefully zerolift will help me
