Icon6 Quick question about Turbo R's

Hey, I know someone is going to say "search" but there are 9 million topics about turbo setups and I have a very basic / specific question. Firstly, this is purely theoretical. At the current time I have no interest in turboing my stock R.

I had a 94 RS which had a drag kit from importparts.com it had the Tial wastegate and a T3/T4 and I think the trim was either a 57 or 60mm trim.
I didn't have an electronic boost controller. I just had the spring set for 8psi and I also had a 10 psi spring which was rarely used. Anyway, the car was ridiculously reliable and hauled ***.

My question is would this type of setup work on an R? What other things would need to be taken into consideration if I were to one day decide to go with this turbo set up?

Thanks.

Yes, it would work on an R. Not only that, it would work better on an R because of the head. Stock B-series bottom ends don't seem to have a problem under 350whp, though guys have made much much more...

There's lots to consider besides those 3 parts you listen. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, clutch, manifold, downpipe, piping, intercooler, gauges, exhaust, tuning.

I wouldn't even consider putting a turbo kit on if your regular maintenance isn't done, and you're compression and leak down tests weren't to spec.

Check your state laws on modifying and emission testing as well.

Do you have multiple layers of security to protect that turbo R?

Lots of stuff...

as long as u have a good tune, good parts and ur motors in good shape it will be strong...mine has run for 5years DD without a problem only reason im rebuilding it now is b/c my clutch gave out and im ready for 450whp...but before i made 275whp on 5 1/2lbs wastegate tune..pulled extremly hard when vtec crosses over

Can you give some specifics? What was your build like?

Lots of stuff...

Yes absolutely about multiple layers of security. I'm VERY paranoid.

Here is a look at my turbo RS build. Some stuff is not relevant but I re-did the entire car from a shell pretty much.

Lots of random parts in there yes...lol

Drag kit is fine, just don't use the missing link, or FMU if it came with one.
Walbro 255lph, and some ID1000's for fuel.

The manifold is ok, and the turbo is pretty good from that kit.

Check your compression and leak down before you bolt anything on your car.

Thanks! What do you recommend for FMU & Missing Link alternatives?
What spark plugs do you use? 2 steps colder NGK or?

Hondata, can't beat the price for what you get. Can find them use with the ECU sometimes for as little as $500.
The plugs? NGK, BKR7E-11 is one stage cooler than stock and I believe work great on a mild boost build being turbo or SC'd.

Thanks guys.

I took the ITR out of the garage today and it fired right up. I live in Canada where it's cold here 9 months of the year and the car has been sitting since October. Added some jet fuel just to get the octane up a bit because I didn't want it to ping. I put 8 kms on it this afternoon. I dunno. I think it might be time for a turbocharger. The experience was less overwhelming than how it used to be

Haha my friend, you have the disease of boost. There is no cure for it either.

Used my old MSD SCI set up on two different cars for quite some time and never had an ounce of trouble with it.

Remember use good parts and just try and keep it simple. You dont want to look back a year later and your car is sitting and you over 5 grand in the hole. It can happen very quickly lol. looking back I would do some 750 injectors and inline pro mani with a gt30, a hondata and call it a day. u can def make good power with everything you need for about 12-1,500
