timing help???
Okay, so I'm a dumb a** here. I'm trying to change the timing and balancer belt on a 2 door 90 accord ex. I can't get the crank pulley off. The service manual doesn't really help on that one. Does the bolt come off clockwise or counter-clock wise? How do you get the crank to hold still while trying to get the bolt out? Really appreciate your help here. Got a 17 yr old that is having a fit to burn the road up with this, but I won't let him until we get this changed. Thanks so much... Gary.
This is one of the tightest bolts on the car. Theres 2 ways to get the crankpulley off. The first way is to use a 1/2"impact gun. If it doesnt loosen or the motor spins, well that sucks for you. You'll need to rent or buy a special tool thats 6 or 8 sided. It fits in the special slot for it on the crankpulley, then you use the impact gun on that.
you can also remove it by removing the plate on thebell housing that covers the flywheel, then jam it from spinning by usin a large screw driver or prybar while at the same time using the impact gun to remove thebolt.. consult the helms or haynes manual .. they have pics
I got the crank pulley off my sisters Maxima by using a VERY large "C" clamp. I wrapped a couple of the flat rubber bungee cords around it to help grip it, and wrapped a towel around it as well to help protect it a bit, and then positioned it so the shaft of the clamp was wedged up against one of the suspension bars (can't remember exactly which one--might have been the sway bar or something). Then just went at it with the breaker bar, and after some weird positions and an aching back, it finally came off. Putting it back on was the same, just had to find a different spot to wedge the shaft of the C clamp. Worked like a charm and didn't break anything.
Geez, the things you have to do just to change a freakin water pump! haha

I had the same problem.... Till I rented a 3/4" Electric Impact wrench (best $20 I ever spent). I put that sucker on and it pulled that nut right off.... You don't have to keep the flywheel from turning or anything, just hit that bolt with the impact until it comes out.
P.S. It's threaded regular. (righty tighty)

Yeah, the better impact wrench did it. What also made this so rough is that somebody stripped the tensioner bolt and I can't get it out so i had to play around with getting the belts on and keeping timing right. Just trial and error but think I've got it now... Thanks for the help.... gary.
