Brand new to the Honda scene...need advice.
So I'm looking at buying and building my first Honda/Acura. I'm currently after a 98 teg with a b18b1 in it. I want to go all motor. Friends tell me that the GSR head will bolt up. But having been a Ford guy my whole life, I know absolutely zip about Honda engines. So of course I am full of questions, so here it goes...Is a GSR head swap a good idea? What cams/valvetrain, intake manifold, air intake etc. should I use if I want to keep the stock bottom end from the b1? Is it even possible to keep the stock bottom end?
Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the help.
Well. like I said, been a Ford guy my whole life, built plenty of 4.6ls and 5.0ls(which is really a 4.9l
) and I figured I'll try anything once, maybe twice, and if I like it I'll name it after some hot bitch. So i started looking at a Honda. Thinking about junk-yarding another motor to use as a starting point. If I re-sleeve it and have the head machined I ought to be in okay shape for a start.

I'm trying to keep it under $1500-$2000 for the motor, I would like to say N/A all Day...but I have this turbo from my last project (1987 turbo volvo...****ed the bottom end on that thing really nicely) just sitting on the shelf in the garage and its really tempting me.

Being that he's in the all motor forum I'd say he's looking to not used a turbo.
OP:
I'd say get a b20 or an h2b. You've already got a b-series transmission, so an h2b swap will be a bit cheaper since you've already got mounts. Swapping the transmission for a quicker geared one is up to you, always something you can do later. But the h2b swap will be a bit easier and cheaper to do since you've already got a b swap.
Bigger displacement is where it's at in all motor. So get a solid b20vtec going or go h2b.

Only problem I have is that this turbo was a head gasket assassin on the Volvo, which is probably why the motor is now shot. The car that I'm looking at has 80k on it, so I'm not trying to end its life early. I would prefer to do a a good n/a build on the current bottom end first and maybe build up a boosted, sprayed K on the stand(Props to my boy Jay for this suggestion). I have heard that the LS Vtec takes boost like a son of a beezie though.
Keep it stock and save your money towards something better looking.
and since you have that turbo already to start of with. Just piece a cheap turbo kit and have WAY more power then a gsr swap. Good luck. Oh and make shure that you get a proper tune and not to step on it on a base map. Base maps are to get u to the nearest tuner.

that turbo is junk, sorry but with the availability of turbo parts for a honda it would be a waste of time. I wouldn't put anything smaller then a t3/t4 50 trim on a turbo B series.
But I am still on the look out for a good deal on a b-series powered car.
hi, maby u could think about getting a supercharger m62 on 8.7 psi should be cheaper and it's very effective solution for b-series. You could keep stock bottom, it will be safe for the engine.
Vtec head on a stock Non Vtec block is a NO NO, to me atleast.. But that just me..
If I ever had a LSV or my buddy wanted a LSV, I would NOT recommend a Stock put together setup. That is setup for Failer. The block will give out in no time.

Op, welcome to H-T. If you haven't already I recommend reading bambams how to build a reliable b20/lsvtec thread. It'll give you a good foundation on whats what and show you some of the options are available so you can decide what route it best suited for you. Also if your doing the rebuild yourself, youtube some of evens tuning videos on assembly for some pointers. Good luck
