Default Case wont fit with the main shaft bearing in place

I took the internals on of a gsr tranny and put then into another gsr tranny that had bad gears. Every thing fits without the main shaft bearing on the top. But you put it on and the case drop into place. any suggestions?

Lift the case up so the mainshaft can seat down all the way.

I have a hammer under the edge of the case. The case just wobbles around with about an 1" from coming together, the case wont sit on the bearing. I tried 2 bearings, take the bearing off and the case drops right in place. I even put the bearing in the case and nothing.

Make sure it is installed correctly (it is tapered, thin edge of outer race goes on the bottom). You also need to shim the mainshaft.

Did you take the gear stacks apart, any chance you mixed up a gear from the other transmission (did this once before, pushed the shafts apart slightly at the top and the case wouldn't fit on)

Don't u have to shim it if you're using a different gearset on a different case? Also, is this the first time that you open/try to close a tranny case? Did you practice at all on the original gearset/case taking it off/putting it on? If it's only off by 1", moving the shift lever from 3rd to 4th and back will drop the case right in. I just put a b16 one together last night and I had the same issue and it solved it just the same as described.

no this isn't my first rodeo... but i found a burr on the bearing. i sanded it down and it fixed the problem. thens stopped for the night.

I have worked on few trannies, jsut never swapped cases especailly goin from a trappered diff to a sealed diff.

i'll let you know if i run into any other problems.

You have two gears engaged at once.

You have the reverse idler gear flipped upside-down (which could be the reason for the difficulty installing the case).

check for this you might have missed something by not doing this.

check for play in the 4th and 5th gear. a sliding hub assembly will cause gap issues thus not making the case not close properly if it is installed upside down.

also, check the shims on the casing.

are your mainshaft washers installed properly?

what about your isb washer? is it sitting at the 12 o'clock position?

if your gears are engaged it will lock up.

check to see if your selector assembly shaft is sitting properly.

make sure if you are running a taper bearing reverse idler you NEED a matching washer. but not for the idler that is brass driven.

other than that i did, however, notice was that your c/s is sitting up higher than usual. any one else notice that?

Hahah. Good to hear ya got that solved.

I had a friend a few years ago tear their trans down for me to check out, and, upon my reassembly of it, I overlooked the fact that he had switched the direction of the reverse idler on me. Took me 2+ hours to get the case to seat. Finally, I looked at the reverse idler and saw it was upside down. LOL Went right together.

Ya i need to pull the case off tonight and clean it up, but i did notice i had a little trouble with one of the gears not shifting once the case was on. Its possible i put the 3 and 4th gear on up side down but i dont think i did.

I was give the 2 world worst trans and some how make a good one out of the two. one tranny had no 5th gear and the other had bad bearings and a cracked case.

one last question and im dont with this tranny. With the counter shaft out of the case what would make it hard to turn 1st gear? it should spin freely not in gear but its very tight. 1st and 2nd shift and turn fine. but 3 4 and 5 and r are locked because first doesn't spin hardly at all.

Damaged needle bearing (bearing halves in 1st gear's case).

New carbon synchros create some tightness in that area, but usually this is only noticeable on the multiple piece synchros like B-series 2nd - not sure what synchronizer rings you're using currently (new carbon, used brass, etc.).
Perhaps even a damaged damper between gear and synchro hub.

Could be a number of things and you'll just have to get in there and check 'er out.

the needle bearings were bad....that's why nothing would turn when i got the case together. first was locked up, thats y 1st and 2nd only worked.
