Default Applying seam sealer

I was just wondering how everyone goes about applying seam sealer?I am in the process of removing the oem stuff and the wire brush I am using is taking it down to bare metal so I figured I would ask and see if you guys apply it to bare metal or prime and apply?Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

because people post threads asking the same questions time and time and time and time again

people are too lazy to search

but to answer your question, some seam sealers/adhesives come with their own "primers" you lay down on BARE metal be4 you apply the seam sealer product.. if you have epoxy primer down, lay it on top of that. one rule of thumb to live by when painting at any stage is, its only as strong as what you put it on

well i was searching for some answers, i found 10 threads where some jerk said to search. no one really helped. if as many people answered the question instead of saying search there would actually be less threads made. whenever i search for a topic i am almost guaranteed to find a thread where someone else asked for an answer and was told to search. makes me not even want to search.

i was looking for some infor on using the 3m stuff to apply a new roof skin. on ourtube the use this applicator gun, but the gun is like $50. i dont want to buy the gun seeing ill prob onl use it once. if i squeeze the two parts out on a mixing board and apply it b brush, will it leave enough curing time for me to apply, set and clamp down my new roof skin?

they should have different seam sealers, that cure at different times. so you can get a slow, medium and fast curing seam sealer. slow of course gives u time to move the panel around and adjust... fast of course being, set it, and leave it.

if your going to use metal bond for your roof skin, you really shouldn't mix the bond on a mixing board. the whole process revolves around the mixing tip. if it doesn't mix properly, it doesn't cure and that could make a big problem.

im sorry dude its a pricey ordeal but its the truth.

most products even require a tube length purge so the mix is complete before you apply it on a panel

every thing i just said is basic rule of thumb for any two part seam sealer or two part bonding product.

some oem manufacturers insist on weld through metal bond. you bond the roof skin and spot weld the four corners. toyota mainly. from oem manufacturer's to i-car classes using bond only is an approved repair

using a used roof skin is a different story if your drill the spot welds out

Well I can get my hands on the seam sealer gun or use the brush on.I am just respraying the entire car inside and out and wanted to really clean up the sealer in the bay.The car has had a full wire tuck done with a Rywire harness so I am trying to have the bay look very clean.I am not removing too many bolt holes I am not into the whole shaved trend.I just need the sealer to look very smooth around the shock towers.

Siblues, 3M has some tips that you can put onto your seam sealer tubes... that will help lay the seam sealer as smooth or flat as possible. or use a plastic spreader, and cut it to shape so it can help spread the seam sealer evenly

you'll make life harder on yourself trying to figure a way to dispense them tubes without a gun. just get the gun. borrow it or something... buy it, use it, return it lol.

its very important that they catalyze properly. especially with the mixing nozzles that are used, you have to be able to dispense both parts of the cartridge evenly.
