my timing is retarded
With the timing light at 16 deg., it appears my timing is ~4 deg.
I had lately noticed the car running like crap, so started checking things...
So, I tried to change the timing.
I cannot physically move the distributor enough to increase it to more than about 8 deg.
Can anyone elaborate on how you "reset" this?
I'm assuming I take the distributor off, reset to 16, put it back on, but if anyone has done this and could expand on the process a bit?
Or, if anyone could tell me why this is the WRONG thing to be doing, and what I should be doing instead?
(I know I'll get these comments anyway, might as well ask for 'em)
Also, how does this happen?
What would cause the timing to be so off??
Thanks for any help!!

If you really need to advance it that much. I have heard(and seen) of people "slotting" the bolt holes with a large drill bit. Remove as much material as you need.
do you have the short on the service check connector?
To clarify a few things...
car is stock.
we set piston #1 to tdc and none of the timing marks lined up with the pointer.
all i can figure is the timing belt slipped, and indeed the timing belt is not as tight as it needs to be
i could have pulled it off the cam gears
and yes, the service connector was jumped.
and yeah, i said we-todd-did
