Head Gasket
ok...so im told when i bought the car i need new headers cause it has a leak, i can feel the leak when i put my hands down in the bay, its right after where y headers leaving the enigne meet into a another, one section pipe, nort very far down at all. Now do i need a new header or new head gasket, how much will it run me, is it hard to install?
You need both. Everytime you put a new header on you are susposed to put on a new gasket. I would say the leak is in you header if it is that far down. If it is the stock header you might want to look at some stainless steel DC headers. The header will run roughly 300 for an aftermarket and should be between 100-175 for the stock. I think head gasket are fairly expensive dependin on the brand......idk maybe 20 bucks for a head gasket????? don't quote me on the head gasket price.
A head gasket is way different from a header gasket.
For an exhaust leak, you need a header or exhaust manifold gasket. If you need that, you'll be hearing some exhaust note from under the hood.
A head gasket goes between the block (Lower portion of the engine, has the cylinders, pistons, and crank in it) and the head (Upper portion of the engine, has the valves, cam, and rocker arms in it.) If you need one of those, several things could be going on:
Coolant shooting out or bubbling while running the engine cold.
Excessive steam from exhaust.
Frothy milkshake looking stuff in the oil. (Coolant mixing with oil.)
Hydro-Locking (Coolant gets into the cylinder and you can't crank the engine.)
Poor Idle.
Hard starting while cold.
Chronic overheating.
Coolant loss without a puddle under the car or in the floorboard.
Loss of compression in the cylinder.
I think that's all of them... Some might not occour, some might happen together... If you need a head gasket, you'll know about it... Although I know someone who drove a 1990 Civic EX (B16) almost 20 miles on a blown head gasket.
I don't mean to insult anyone if they already knew this... It's good reference for those who don't.
