Default D16y8 swap - How do I wire VTEC using a DX ECU?

Ok, I've searched and searched and couldn't find what I was looking for. I just traded and got a 96 DX that they swapped a d16y8 into. The girl I traded bought another ecu but its the same exact as the stock dx ecu. I know there is a way to wire the vtec solenoid without getting a different ecu. If someone could please either link me to what I am searching for or could help me out it would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks,
Lissa

no, just get the right ECU P2P and be done with it.

Yep, using an RPM activated switch is an old school hack that never really worked right in the first place.

the y8 is an OBD2 motor, so a p28 wouldnt work without a conversion harness and if they are in a state with smog controls, they will fail

You could run it on the non-vtec ecu for emissions testing if you have to. This is what most people do in this situation. And then just hook up a P28* with a conversion harness to enable VTEC. The Y8 will still run fine on the Y7 ECU, it will just be held back a little performance wise.

*instead of a P28, any Civic or Integra 1992-1995 ECU can work if certain parts are added. A P2E or whatever it is for the Y8 would be the "proper" way to do it, but the OBD1 ECU will let you tune it far easier and cost about the same.

Thanks, to all that replied and no the state i live doesn't require any kind of inspection at all. I can get the ecu cheap, I just have lack in my funds lol. I know i've seen people wire them by splicing the harness and wiring it to the non vtec ecu. I know I can take the two I have a place the pins in one to the other but I don't want to go through all that either. I will just get a p2p eventually. This is my first ob2 civic, i've had an eg and a ej1. Someone also pointed out that I have a em1 front end. I am just thankful to be a honda owner again. It is all I know I traded a DSM for the civic.

You can use either one. With the Y7 you'll have to rewire the IACV to 2 wire, add VTEC wiring, add knock wiring and possibly extend the secondary O2 if you don't use the Y7 manifold.

With the Y8 it'll be plug and play you'll just have to wire the secondary O2 directly to the ECU.

Use a 96-98 P2P ECU from a 5 speed model Civic EX. Reuse your distributor for plug and play.

No VTEC fuel maps = no point trying to get VTEC to work.

I sold my last P2P ecu I had for 10 dollars because that was better then throwing it away. OP just lowball anyone with a P2P they will probably take it.. OBD2 Honda ECUs are pretty much value-less.
