Help needed: no pickup/acceleration in 3/4/5 gear
Thanks in advance for any help.
I own a '91 civic si. While driving recently, I randomly began getting no power/acceleration/pickup when shifting into 4th gear. I shifted at roughly 3200 rpm, and immediately dropped to and couldn't get more out of my engine than roughly 2000 rpm. I got to my destination in third, and when I left a couple hours later everything drove fine.
I encountered the problem again a few days later, when in 5th going up hill on the interstate I began to lose power/rpms/speed. Again, after getting to my destination in 3rd and parking it for awhile, everything worked fine.
The problem happened a third time yesterday, this time when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and getting nothing above 2000 rpm from my engine while in 3rd.
Adding to my confusion, my break fluid had been low and in need of refilling/bleeding. When the power problem started, I suddenly had full pressure in my break pedal, despite having not added fluid or bled the breaks.
I am utterly confused. If anyone has any advice or has encountered anything at all similar to this, please let me know.
Thanks!

keep your shifting in the power band, above ~3700 rpm, and you won't have that issue. Honda engines don't make much power until higher RPMs, so trying a steep hill in third at 2k RPM isn't going to work the same as it does in a 1970 Nova. Small engines like to rev, and only make power at higher revs. You are lucky you have an SI, cause a DX on the highway at 75 mph going up a 20% grade requires 3rd gear at 5500 rpm..
Mechanically, if your brake master cylinder is leaking into the booster and getting sucked into the engine, that could be causing some of your preceived engine lag, but i really doubt that is your problem.
My recommendation would be to fix your brake problem. Then your power issue may, or may not, get better. If the brake repair doesn't fix it, apply more gas and choose a lower gear.
Also, are there any check engine lights or any reason to suspect the car is down on power? what do your compression numbers look like?
