Default auto tranny works only by shifting manually

Car:

1997 Civic Ex

Problem:

In D4 it won't shift by itself, but you can go to 2, D3, then D4 and it will drive fine if you shift it yourself.

Solution:

????

Anybody have any ideas? I am going to buy it for better gas mileage work car from a buddy for a good price but I am not sure if it is something small or if the tranny needs replaced. I have an auto dx tranny from a 97 I could use if all else fails.

It'll throw a mainshaft sensor code if you do that due to different gear ratios, ask me how I know.

The Civic tranny does not use vacuum.

Any CEL or D4 trouble codes for the transmission thrown?
