New here :-) 93 Civic with speedo and transmission problems
I just recently picked up a 93 Civic EX. I was looking for a good forum for community and knowledge purposes and a friend suggested this one and I figured I'd give it a shot.
Civic is basically just my commuter car as it costs nearly half as much as my STi to drive!
The Civic has about 211,000+ miles. I say "+" because it seems to have the common problem of the speed control module dying. Speedometer basically just works when it wants to. Engine seems pretty sound.
Unfortunately about a week after I got it I noticed when cold it shifted a little hard from first to second. Then stays in second for about a mile. then you'll here a chirping sounds, similar to if a tire rub the fender, and then it will shift and be fine for the rest of the day.
Occasionally if its sat for a few hours it will do a slight grind right before shifting second, usually within 50 feet though and does fine after that. Today and yesterday right after starting, after it sat for a few hours, it didnt seem to know what gear it wanted to be in for about a minute.
I fear needing a new transmission (unless anyone has a better idea).
I have changed the tranny fluid with Honda ATF, a few days ago I drained out some ATF and added some Lucas Transmission treatment but still the same deal...
Look forward to hearing from you all!
*cheers*
*edit* I was going to post a couple pictures but Im on satellite and its not uploading...

Did you use the new Honda DW-1 or the old ATZ-1? When you drained and refilled trans, what was on the magnetic drain plug?
If it were me and my car, I'd drain the trans again to get that lucas out of it. The new Honda DW-1 is supposed to help the cold shift problems and is backwards compatible with older trans requiring ATZ-1.

i was told something about a speed control module? i have a friend with a 93 and same problem. and a 94 same problem.
I was wondering about the VSS but it does it whether or not the speedo is working, and that it only does it once per day and theres a sound of the plates rubbing makes me think not the vss. And a buddy with an automatic has the same VSS issue but not tranny issue.
This morning I let it warm up for about 10 minutes because the whole car was so iced over. But I guess due to that it popped from 2nd to 3rd in about 1/4 mile or less instead of the usual mile or so

Were giving you the best advice you could probably get. We all own the same cars and have dealt with similar issues. Why post if you're going to justify reasons to not take our advice?
