Default What's behind this cover?

This is where the shifter linkage connects to the tranny. What is underneath those four bolts?

Anyone have a diagram?

That is the shift arm cover. Beneath it is the select spring collar, select spring, select spring plate, interlock, shift arm, an 8mm spring washer and an 8mm bolt.

In other words: Things you shouldn't concern yourself with.

my shifter is very sloppy. I'm wondering if there is a worn bushing there is something, like one that would be found in a direct connection shifter.

If I open it up to inspect, is it fairly simply or is there a chance that I can screw things up just by opening it?

Have someone work the shifter from inside the car, whilst you inspect the shift arm closely. Maybe you'll want some hard bushings for the cables to try and reduce motion. I would suggest something like these: http://www.hybrid-racing.com/product...fter-bushings/

its not the linkage. that moves fine. its something below that cover I figure. i've done what you described and its not the springs or linkage.

I figure there is a worn bushing inside there but I have no idea how a linkage transmission works. in my conquest, there is a rubber ball that gets worn out and causes sloppy shifter and that's a very simply fix. i wanna take a peak under that cover and see if I can tell whats up

its definalty not the part you linked, there is no slop there

There are no bushings beneath that cover.

If you start pulling things apart without knowing what you're doing, and you mess up your transmission in the process, that's on you.

Buy a Helm's manual. You need one.

Is there a diagram In can look at?

I've dismanntled trasmnmissions before, I got a 5 speed sitting, taken apart, need to replace all the syncros. but thats from a RWD car, its very simple. I dont know about these transverse FWD transmissions...

Not to be rude, but you couldn't even figure out how to change the wheel cylinder on your drum brakes without someone walking you through it.

Leave the transmission alone.

*This measurment can be done without taking anything out of the tranny*

The rusty looking thing in the center of that pic is the change lever. The thing at the top of the pic on the other side of the circled area is the shift lever.

1. Measure the groove in the top of the change lever (see pic below). If it's more than 15.15 mm (0.596 inches) wide replace the change lever.

2. Remember to grease the groove. Also replace and grease the dust seals. One is under the change lever and one is between the select lever and select lever cover.

Your measuring the groove the top arrow is pointing to:

Sorry about the fuzzy pic, phone cam.

I'm more experienced with disc brakes and FR cars. Not Drum brakes and confusing shift linkage. I've been doing a ton of work on my Conquest, that car is straight forward and easy to work on. A nice FR layout makes things soooo much easier to see and work on.

I needed more help because drum brakes were confusing me.

Thanks for that diagram Laz, I'll open that up and take a look inside and see if I can obverse where the slop is occurring.

Just pull off the rubber cover, disconnect and measure. Probably gonna need feeler gauges 'cause I don't think calipers can get in there.

well to be quite honest i've never seen the shift selector as the problem for shifter slop, usually its the bushing to the left of the cover and even more likely is the shift lever's pivot (the white plastic casing the shifter sits in and it's shift ball) i'd suggest taking apart the center console and peering down to where your shifter pivots and looking for white dust, that's indication number one of wear, then shift through the gears and see if the plastic is splitting in certain directions....very common problem

I just went out and fooled with mine (same exact thing) and it seemed tight. Something is definitely loose in yours. Are any of the bushings in the shifter cable assembly worn? They're at both ends. Look at the your diagrams to find parts that may be worn- like the select lever spring.

I looked over the linkage before. Everything is taught. It is something inside the tranny. Hopefully something underneath that cover.

Soon as I'm done cleaning up my rear subframe for my Conquest, i'll roll my Civic in and take a look.
