Default 1991 DA starting problem. please help.

I have a 91 DA that has been giving me a problem starting. I push the clutch, turn the key and it wont start. I hear the fuel pump and the starter when I turn the key. The only thing that it does is that it starts the lights and dash. It doesn't actually try turning. I have taken it to 4 or 5 different mechanics and they have told me to replace the distributor, the starter, the main relay and the fuel pump. It was doing this a while back but when I replaced the main relay it worked great for about a week. Then it started to randomly not wanting to start again every few days. The main relay still clicks but it just wont budge sometimes until I either push start it or kinda step on the gas and pray it starts not to long from then. I got a good idea from a guy at ASAA racing to advance the distributor a bit so i did. It worked good but its starting to do it again and I really dont feel like going to another mechanic so he can tell me to replace the whole b18a1. please help if you can. Will try anything that won't break me. If you need more info I will give. Thanks.

i would say check all your grounds for cleanliness and tightness...the relay behind the radio for the starter, and finally the actual switch where u put the key, the plastic piece, behind it the contacts tend to get really dirty and worn, clean it and try that if not replace the whole unit.

I have the same question, your post is a little confusing, it is not clear if engine turns over, [cranks] and does not start or does not even turn over, [starter motor not working], please clarify. 94

When you turn the ignition key, if you are not getting crank noise then there is the problem with the starter motor or dead or low battery may be reason for that, but if you know battery is working properly then there could be many problems associated with it and the most common and the first problem could be faulty ignition switch. check the wiring which controls the starter motor, there can be bad or wrong connection among them. If engine cranks then there is no problem with the starter, there may be problem with your fuel system like bad fuel pump and relay. so kindly check out the same.

Is the "click" from under the dash, [starter relay] or is the "click" from the engine bay, [starter motor solenoid].

Try this, turn on the dome light, [or leave door open so dome light stays on] keep an eye on the dome light when trying to start the car, does dome light dim or go completely out when trying to start, [crank] the engine? 94

The click comes from the starter motor. And I will most definitely try the. dome light

try jumping the starter with your key on and if it turns over then its a starter relay or fuse or your ignition

It's hard to say what it is but for what it's worth, my DA had some bad wiring issues and was causing me problems. I had some loose connections under the dash to begin with, due to a ghetto alarm being installed after I first bought the car. Then just the other weekend it was acting up and come to find out my negative battery cable was just f*ing worn out and was causing major problems. If someone you know is good with wiring, have them go through it all and it just might solve your problems.

I just threw my ls motor I took out of my ef hatch and put it in this da shell I bought and I turn the key hear the pump but it won't crank I don't hear the click from the relay either I'm gonna throw a new battery in but I've popstarted it and it's fine but that's the only way I can get it to go also if I hit the brakes the dash lights come on like they would be if you turned your lights on anyone know what that could be? Sorry to threadjack but I've been looming for 4 hours and this thread is the first one where the op problem was like mine

Your dash light problem is the brake and park light filaments in one of the tail light duel filament bulbs are touching each other or you have a grounding problem in the tail lights, most likely a corroded bulb socket.

If the car bump starts, [pop start] then there is nothing wrong with the PGM-FI Main Relay, try a bypass jump, unplug the starter lead at the starter motor, use a jumper lead to supply power directly to the starter lead terminal on the starter motor, you can jump from batt. pos.(+) or to batt. lead at the atarter motor, BE CAREFULL, make sure car is not in gear as engine will crank even if in gear, clutch not stepped on or ign. switch not on, [called a bypass jump for a reason].

Scarykiiid, you should try a bypass jump also. 94
