My friend says hold the brake and rev up a little. but how high should i rev? and does this hurt anything?

You have 2 Basic Options.
1. Have the Trans in Neutral, and rev the engine to 3500 RPM (may Vary per engine) And as the lights drop to the last yellow carefully but quickly shift into Drive and mash the gas to the floor. This isnt that great if you have a low stall torque converter.
2. Have your Trans in Drive, Hold your left foot on the brake petal. Rev the engine as high as you can without letting the car roll. Most tracks do not allow line locks for launch. This is murder on your brakes, but is an option to launch.
Personally I would go with choice 1, and upgrade to the highest stall torque converter you can get. Not sure I never looked for them cuz I run a Man Trans.
Good Luck and Stay Consistant.

i got 2.1 60's all night with stock skinny 13" tires in my hybrid turbo hatch when it was auto...i revved the auto in nuetral at 5-6 K and threw it into d1 and shifted through. i always got the best launches and et's by doing it this way. the auto, in itself, is a great traction control device i must say. it's also nice that you stay spooled if you have trrrrrrr'bo. btw, you will quickly destroy a stock honda auto this way.
The best way to go on a auto tranny is the brake torque method, don't even think about doing the neutral drop, you will kill the tranny. I know many people who have been towed home because of it.
What you want to do is left foot on the brake holding tight and your right foot on the gas rev'd to lets say 3k. when that 3rd light hits, mash the gas and let of the brake and you should shoot out pretty good. Unless you have somebody who can rebuild trannies, i seriously don't recommend the neutral drops. Also, if you do decide to go turbo, don't do the nuetral drop, you build no boost by reving in nuetral. The brake torque method is great with the turbo because it is when you build boost, i would build about 4psi and with the auto you get no wheel spin and are gone. Good luck, i hope this helped.
Remember NO NEUTRAL DROPS
