At the risk of sounding stupid what determines what will and will not work ecu wise? And all obd1 distributors are the same? And finally will any and all of the appropriate ecu's as well as the obd 1 system have the same ability to tune for upgrades? I ask because after the swap I will try to enjoy it for a little while then I want to build it for some mild boost!

Again thanks!

Yeah I have been spending A LOT of time searching... There is just so much information and a lot of which contradicts each other. I'm in for a long learning curve with this car but thats the fun part as I've been running a nitrous small block chevy since 01 and this is totally different!!!!

To run it correctly right out of the box you should run nothing other than a P72.
Other than the P28 being mapped for 1.6 and making a 1.8 run a bit lean, it also lacks the circuitry for the IAB solenoid.

The stock GSR motor has the intake manifold with IAB - second set of butterfly's.
To run anything other than the P72 will require you to get your ECU chipped and also mod the circuit board to add the electronic components for IAB control.
It can be done - I have a chipped PR3 I modified for this.

You also need to know what OBD version your engine is.
OBD1 and OBD2 GSRs trigger IAB differently.
One uses a ground trigger and the other uses a positive voltage trigger.
If you have an OBD2 motor then you will need to search for how to convert it to trigger with the OBD1 ECU.

Now - if you get rid of that intake manifold you can use any vtec ECU that is chipped with B18c maps without IAB control.
Places like Xenocron can get you a basemap done this way.

Any OBD1 or OBD2 distributor will work with the ECU.
You will have to figure out which distributor will bolt up to the head - some bolt right up and others need modifications.
Good reason to just bypass the hassle and use the stock GSR distributor.

Ok I currently have a p72 ecu (obd1 from running the numbers and it was a 95 car) and the original distributor from that motor. If I'm reading this correctly I can use the current parts just have to make up the difference in the wiring harness and convert the car to obd1 ( ihave one from that car as well for plugs etc). I will be using the stock intake for now. I want to get this thing running in stock fashion before I start modding it and throwing more variables into it.

Thanks again for the help.

Use the p72 ecu yhou have and the matching dizzy you have for the motor. Buy your self a obd0-obd1 jumperharness and convert to mpfi. Most jumperharness have a sub harness that have the wires for the iab knock sensor and vtec solinode and vtec oil pressure sensor all you need to do then is get the matching plugs for those sensor and wire it up. Pretty easy just take your time and solder and heat shrink everything. Gl on your swap

Hear is a pic of my sub-harness. For my obd0-obd1 jumperharness. I have the 4 wire o2 sensor plug wired to it. also I have the vtec solinode, and vtec oil press sensor along with knock sensor wire to it. incase I ever decide to go vtec it will all just be plug and play but for now them plugs are neatly tucked away by the ecu till there needed lol.
