Default what tranny is this?

I have a seller who says he has a B-series Hydro tranny for sale but he cannot tell me what kind of tranny he is selling or what car it came from. He says the VIN plate is no longer on the tranny and he cannot find anything on the tranny other than a "S4" stamp on it. I looked through the forum but I cannot find a reference to S4 or any other stamp codes to identify the tranny. Anyone knows what it is?

Could be "S4C" - 99-00 Si commonly if USDM

Could be "S40" - 96-00 Civic SOHC

Those above would be a sticker on the trans. Post some pics of the trans if you can.

I asked seller to send pics and will post same once I get them. He claims it is a B-series GSR tranny but I doubt that. No VIN plate on the tranny either. Thanks for the reply.

Only OBD2 USDM tranny's had vin plates, the early D-series OBD2 tranny's didn't always have them either, but the holes are there, same thing with JDM OBD2 trannys.

Yeah, I figured since he claimed to be selling a late GSR tranny it would have a VIN. I am leery about the claim.

Well, seller says he scrubbed the tranny looking for more numbers on it and only found the YSK 3 on the tranny. I think this might be a gear ratio number or just a casting number. Other than that, the only other marks on the tranny remain the S 4 with nothing else. Maybe it is just a LS tranny?

YSK 3 is the casting number for a B series. The S4 should make it a S4C B16 hydro. It is always best to open the transmission to verify the ratio and that it didn't just have a case replaced. Mainshaft 3rd gear will have 24 teeth for a B16, 25 teeth for a GSR, or 26 teeth for an LS model.

I assume that unless it shows LSD anywhere, it is just a regular B16 Hydro tranny, right? The only stamp on it is S4. I assume the only other way to tell what it is to rotate the main shaft one full turn and count teeth rotated to see the ratios.

Look through the differential, if there's a bar inside it's an open diff, if you can see right through it's got an LSD.

Sometimes if you get lucky there will be an ID sticker tag where the front trans mount goes on the flat area just above it. That will be a better way to ID versus the black "S4" that gets stamped on the clutch housing side of the trans. I know someone did a write-up on mainshaft turns to determine what trans you had..will have to look for it!
