Default back pressure

Ok, I understand that the fact that free flowing exhaust is better, but I also hear that a certain amount of back pressure is needed to keep the power. Can anyone explain this? It doesnt seem to make sense. I mean i know that its true as i have heard multiple race teams talk about it, but I would just like an explaination if possible.

thanks

Search, my friend, Search.....

This has been covered time and time again.

But now that my little lecture is over, here is a free-be:

When people talk about back pressure... the are usually refering the the proper size piping... this is such a thing as too big. When people talk about free flowing, they are refering the the muffler (a chambered muffler is restrictive, and straight through design is more free flowing), the cat, the header design. These are two different topics and often get confused as the same subject.

Next time use the search function first, aight?
