Default 1990 CRX-VX swap

Hey guys, 1st post here...

I bought a 1990 Honda CRX. It has been modified alot, and I plan on changing it around even more to suit my needs...

Right now it has a B18b1 N/A motor with a B16 S1 LSD cable tranny running on a Chromed/ chipped P72 ECU. It has inovative poly motor mounts and aftermarket headers with NO flex pipe, this shakes the Hell out of the car. The car gets about 28-30mpg and runs ~4000rpm at 65mph. I drive a TON (750mi a week) so I need WAY better MPG then 30.

It had skunk2 coilovers and was slammed down to the floor. So I jacked it up 3" and added 195/60-15 tires and it dosent rub but it is bouncy as hell! Im looking for the CRX SI suspension to throw on it.

I just bought a Imported D15z1 motor from an Importer it has ~35k on it. It comes in on friday this week, Im looking at a crx HF tranny but am having a really hard time locating one for less then $400 Im also looking into a crx DX tranny or a civic VX hydro tranny. I would prefer to stay cable and save the troubles, but if I cant find a HF tranny I may go down the hydro conversion road.

Here is my list for the swap, Please tell me what else I may want to get

D15z1 motor, Timing belt, Tensioner,
P07 ECU,
stock CRX motor mounts (what other motor mounts will work?)
CRX HF tranny, new CRX axles.

I hope the manifold will come with an O2 sensor, if not I'll get one, the other question I have is about the EGR black box, can I run without it? Will it still get good mpg? And can I get or make my own selinoid for this w/o the box?

if you run it without the EGR Control Solenoid and the P07 you will get a Check Engine Light and a Code 12 - the box is just a cover - inside the box are 2 items, the EGR solenoid and a CVC (constant vacuum control) valve - i would try to find these from a salvage yard - the EGR solenoid has a 2-wire connector - one wire is black/yellow and is 12V power - the other is orange with a blue stripe and runs to ECU pin A11

buy 88-91 civic or crx mounts only. One of the previous posters mentioned civic mounts but you need the mounts that match your car, not the ones off the newer civic motor.

you can get them any where, online, honda dealerships, part stores.

Can the EGR solenoid come from a 95 accord? Or will this not work correctly?

It came!!! It a jdm d15b (d15z1) vtec-e. It's got the O2 sensor, EGR valve, the entire harness. It's missing the flywheel, downpipe/cat.

I still need the above missing items, as well as, a d series alt. Hf tranny, d mounts, and minor stuff like alt belt and hoses...

One on the drivers side above the pullys, one above the tranny, one below the firewall and one below the radiator? is this right??

Thanks

Great thread. I'm looking forward to following this as I want to do the same thing to one on my HFs.

There is a thread on crxMPG detailing a VX swap that you may be interested in reading.

I ended up getting an 88 HF tranny with 59k miles... I'm going to order a clutch today, will the axles that fit the b16 hydro LSD tranny fit the 88 hf tranny? And do I order 88 hf tranny axle seals?

You will need the axle seals for a HF tranny and you will also need to get new axles for the HF tranny. The b16 hydro tranny axles will not work.

I dont remember if the splines are different on the tranny side or if they are different on the hub side. Im pretty sure it is the hub that is different though.

Ok, I've just finished looking and searching, I need to know what type and how much oil for my d15z1 motor and 88 Crx HF tranny.

Id like to go full synthetic for MPG reasons....

I ended up going with mobil 1 advanced FE 0w20 for the motor, it's rated protection compares to a 5w-20 dyno oil. And I figure it won't ever see over 5000 rpm and will mostly be freeway miles... 650mi a week...

What should I use in the tranny?
