true shocks could be gone, always best to use a camber kit and aftermarket shocks and struts even when only lowering 1.5 inches. saves tires, and shocks in the long run.

the guys are right, you should not rub tires with stock rims unless you have some of those hella flush wheel spacers to kick the wheels out....when you say a "rubbing sound"....whats that? most tire rubbing sounds are like sticking something rubber into a fan....Is that what it sounds like?
how's the weather down there? 205/50-15 tires are way smaller than the stock size 195/60-15's.

shocks control the springs, the springs hold up the car....ether way, with tires that are almost a inch shorter that stock and stock ep rims, there is no way you should rub....you need to find out where that noise is comming from.....is it comming from the ft or rear? Then look at your tires and find out where its rubbing( inside or outside of the tire)...then look at the car and find where the tire is rubbing( there should be marks)....let us know where the rubbing noise is comming from.....
My interwed guess without looking at the car would be a couple of things...
1) could be a wheelwell liner is missing some of those little plastic clips and hanging kinda low in the wheelwell.
2) could be one or more ripped compliance bushings and this is allowing a lca to flop aroundunder corning load.
3) could be a really shot wheel bearing or lower balljoint....
