Icon2 Timing belt 2001 Honda Civic Ex VTEC

I was wondering if anyone knows...does a 2001 civic ex have an automatic shutoff if the timing belt snaps, or would it ruin the valves / cause other damage if it breaks??

The D17 is a collision engine, so if your belt snapped... your valvetrain would be damaged.

im just concerned because i dont know if the previous owner ever changed it, considering it has 200,000 and the air filter had a mouse nest in it, im assuming the belt is pretty brittle by now

If you're doing the work yourself, $150 or so for the parts (I'd recommend doing the water pump at the same time, since they run on similar replacement schedules).

Do you plan on doing the work yourself? That will save you a fair amount of money. You should do the water pump, too. You're overdue. Also check the valve clearances (intake .18 - .22mm / exhaust .23 - .27mm), change the spark plugs, transmission fluid, brake fluid, cabin air filters, etc.

The kits (water pump, timing belt, tensioner, gaskets, etc) run around $150 - $190, depending on who you buy from and whether or not they're OEM parts. If you're going to have a shop do it, plan on spending well-over $400.

If you want to do it yourself, use this DIY from the FAQ's.
