There is a cable that runs from the dash control **** to the heat control valve in the engine compartment. You have a problem someplace along this cable. This happened to me. My problem was that the cable/valve froze up. This then popped off the connection to the **** while trying to operate. I removed heater control unit from dash to expose cable. Then I lubricated cable and manually turned heat control valve until it unfroze. As a temp fix you can manually turn valve in the engine compartment to turn heat on or off (not very convenient, but better than nothing)

check your heater control valve. There is a cord that hooked into it near the middle firewall. you should be able to move that switch back and forth. If you can't then you need a new HCV.

No problem, don't get me wrong though. It could be the cable, and then you have a much larger problem on your hands, mostly because taking off your dash to get to it takes alot of patience. Just make sure you can switch your HCV first though. Much easier fix.

It is also easy to pull the **** off and be sure it isn't broke. Just an idea based upon your statement.

Vow Sir, BINGO. I pulled the **** & there it was cracked up. I twisted the cable with pliers and AC & Heater both working. Thanks a million and god bless you.
I also want to thank quickster and dafang for helping me solve the problem. Thanks again to everyone.

Hi all, I see this is an old thread but we are having a related problem, now the heater **** (the one that controls how cold or hot, is that the blender ****?) turns waaaaay too easily after being kind of hard to turn (oops) and I would like to check it as well to see if I broke the **** or if I broke something inside when I forced it. How to pop off the **** to see? Just yank it? Screwdriver?

So so so so so so so so so hoping there is no removing of dashes involved with what I did . . . .

Thank you all for being here and for your help.

Hi fidgiegirl, it's a very simple job, you have to pull the control know towards you, if it doesn't slide out easy then use a screw driver to carefully lever it out. You will find a crack inside the ****. The best way to deal with it is by using super glue in the crack
and then grip it to close the crack with a pliers or molgrip until the glue dries. Now it should be ready to fit it back on. I hope this should resolve the problem.

mine's cable was jumped off the heater control valve.. bent it a bit downwards, and put it back. and the clamp on the other end was fallen off.. made a quick bracket, and bolted into place. works like a charm..

Hi All, looks like this thread is pretty old, but hoping for some insight. I have a 1992 Civic, the heater is stuck on, i already replaced the cable from the slide switch to the control unit under the dash because it was uncoiled on the connecting end, didn't make a difference. I also have manually moved the heater control valve under the hood by the firewall, but no difference either. Is it possible that the HCV is shot? is it common for those to go bad? If that is the case then the heater hoses will supply hot constantly regardless of where the arm on the HCV is positioned or where the linkage is under the dash, right?
