Default stage 2 cam smog question

Did alot of searching and i couldn't find much info on this. Im looking into getting a Bisimoto stage 2 cam soon and I was wondering if it would effect my smog much or if anyone in cali had problems passing smog with and aftermarket cam.

Also if I am NOT planning on doing a tune (i know this is not recommended) do I need the bisimoto cam gear, or would the stock cam gear work fine? just trying to weigh my options and get a price estimate.

My car is a f22b1 with I/H/E

On a side not I have an apexi world sport 1 with the stock catalytic converter and I am wondering if this cat is restricting the air flow alot and if upgrading the cat will make a big difference. Thanks for the help!

No, but tuning for a better cam makes a big difference.

Seriously, if you aren't going to tune for it, you may as well leave it out. Just more headaches for you.

Thank you for the quick response. I live near bisi's shop so i might as well go big or go home and get the tune there. I know his rate is rate is 160 an hour but how long would it take to tune the cam? would I just need to buy any p28 ecu for the tune or is there a specific one or more things i would need. Sorry for all the questions, I understand a lot about cars and do everything myself but this tuning business is still a mystery to me.

I don't know, why don't you call them and ask. Tuning depends on a lot of stuff, including how good your guy is.

If you don't get it tuned, you will fail smog miserably as the air fuel maps will be waay off.
You need a tuning package. It could be a VAFC, a chipped ECU, standalone EMS, whatever.

I would call Bisi myself to find out as he's the one who knows about them.

A tune is a must when you drop in a bigger lift cam; thus, throwing your Air/Fuel way off, and your engine won't run/idle right. You don't have to have a adjustable cam gear seeing that this Bisi Level 2 VTEC cam won't affect p2v or v2v. But having one will benefit the setup if you want to have Bisi spend more time to adjust the timing to extract more power from your setup which will cost you more.

Shops here in my city usually takes about an hour of tuning and most shop here charges $150.00-$170.00/hr. But different area will have different rates and system, so I'd call them up to find out.

Yes, the stock cat does restrict the exhaust flow. I have a 2.5" Hi-Flow cat on mine, but I'm H-Series though. You can get Magnaflow Hi-Flow cat for your exhaust setup to help the flow. The Apexi WS1 I heard is restricting the flow as well, but I love how it sounds and it look, so I don't really care if it restricts or not. Thats just me.

Thanks for the info Nus Dogg. That was really helpfull. All of this cali smog stuff is killing my mod list. CARB legal cats are expensive. but ya, the apexi WS1 is a sweet exhaust but i wish it was 2.5 instead of 2.25. Ill talk to Bisi when im a little closer to doing this.

If anyone has any cali smog experiences with any stage 2 cam let me know please.
