Default crx89k20's Honda Story So Far...

Hello Everyone!

Just started the K swap in my CRX. I was never a Honda person until I bought a 92 Prelude Si about three years ago. Swapped that from a F20A (DOHC, non-VTEC) to a JDM H22A1.

This last summer my tensioner went on my H22, and I decided that I really wanted to rip this car down and build it from the ground up. In the interest of a build, I needed a daily driver. This is when I picked up a clean 89 CRX Si (D16).

The paint is sun-faded, but NO RUST. It's very hard to find a car in WI that is 22 years old and free of rust. My boyfriend surprised me with a brand new stock suspension as well. The slow motor was just great because this was my daily driver while I built my 'lude. About five months ago, the D motor started missing and I knew something was up. I opened it up to find that there was soooooooo much blow-by. The spark plugs were covered in oil. Instead of ripping apart a 22 year old D motor, I said screw it. Out the D motor went.

In with the K20A! I've been picking up parts for the five months and finally got my car in to a friend at Piller's Auto Repair who is going to do the swap for me. Unfortunately, I'm in college and I work. I'm moving from apartment to apartment and have no way to do this myself.

Here is my list of parts that are worth mentioning for the swap:

K20A Type-R
6 Speed Tranny (LSD - 4.7 Final Drive - Y2M3)
GM SyncroMesh
Royal Purple Oil
Hondata K Pro ECU
K&N Cone Air Filter
Yellow-Top Optima Battery
Purple PasswordJDM Battery Tie Down
K-Tuned Header
Fujitsubo Legalis R Exhaust
Walbro 255
BDL 70mm Throttle Body
Golden Eagle Fuel Rail
Aeromotive FPR w/ SS Braided Lines
Exedy Stage 1 Clutch
Fidanza 8 lb Flywheel
Hasport K-Series Axles
Hasport Motor Mounts
Hybrid Racing K Swap Bolt-In Short Shifter
Hybrid Racing Weighted Chrome Shift ****
Hybrid Racing Chain Tensioner
Hasport Competition Series II Coil-overs
Purple Blox LCAs
Stock 06 RSX Shifter Cables
Stock Rims w/ Cheap Tires
(New rims and tires in the spring, as soon as I get the cash. )
91 JDM CRX Dash
CRX SiR Gauge Cluster
Full wire tuck
Full brake tuck
Battery Relocated to the Trunk
Wiper Motor Relocated
Honda (2000) Type-R Phoenix Yellow Engine Bay

Dash is gone!

This started as a budget build that got really out of hand, and I'm running out of money fast...

Just talked to boomplustoys.net today. They said that my Fujitsubo Legalis-R exhaust has begun production in Japan. I've been waiting since January, and they said hopefully we'll know a date soon. Having to pay this much, AND wait forever is quite depressing. But, it's really a piece of art... Waaaay expensive.

Mounts are welded in, and the motor has been test fitted. Off to paint last week! Phoenix yellow. I'm a poor kid, so it's just the engine bay for now. This summer I will paint the rest of the car.

Either way, more pictures to come soon!

This definitely has to be one of the more expensive swaps, as far as Hondas go. But, it should be worth it in the end. My goal is to have a nice, powerful car that is very reliable.

I want to reach out to more Honda communities! I would really like to be able to go to a few cool shows this summer, and I figure a networking of people is a good place to start!

Might be waiting quite awhile for that exhaust with the way things are in Japan right now, maybe not though.

Nice build though for sure. Should be a pretty fun dd!

haha, Well, turns out I used to be REALLY poor. Then, I joined the Army National Guard and am going to school full time. I started this build, and now I'm poor again!

I'm in Milwaukee. Where did you spend time at? I know most of this state like the back of my hand... I probably have family where you were... Lol, actually, the way WI goes: You were probably with my family. haha!

I'm pissed about the tsunamis. Not just because of my exhaust, but mostly because of my exhaust. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and I hope they get the relief they need.

But... I want my car to go, and I need that exhaust to do it. So, if Fujitsubo is no longer after this, I have to start thinking again. But, I'm hoping that they were completely missed...

Just in case everyone hasn't heard, ARC International out of Japan is done for because of the tsunamis.

My fingers are crossed for Fujitsubo.

Just wondering what engine you have? It says k20a, frist picture looks like a us engine because orange oil dip stick and silver vavle cover, but the pic of enigne in the car have looks jdm red cover and black dip stick, ethier way k20 is powerful for a crx and lots of fun! also wondering if you have desided what your gonna do about the hood?

Yes, girl tuner here! My boyfriend is a Nissan guy with a 200SX SE-R with a SR20DET swap, so it's a constant battle in this household! Honda > Nissan!

As for the motor... To start my swap, I initially bought a K20Z1 from some guy off of k20a.org. He said it was in great shape, we ran a leak-down, ALL of the valves were bent. NO compression in cylinders 3 and 4. So, since I already had my hands went, I bit my tongue and went ahead and ordered a K20A from hmotorsonline.com. 10 more hp stock and an LSD weren't a bad choice. I was still bummed about getting screwed though, not to mention I was out $4k.

As for the hood. As you may/may not be able to see from the pictures, the hood is USDM. For now, we're spacing the **** out of it to make it work! I'm spending $20K+ on this swap, so I'm pinching pennies wherever I can. This summer I plan on buying carbon fiber everything... Ha, well, hood, fenders, sun roof insert, and hatch. The rest will be painted Phoenix yellow to match the engine bay. This summer, wheels, tires, and a big brake kit will also be installed. But, for now, the USDM hood is going to have to work!

I just got an e-mail from Boomplustoys.net about my exhaust. HUGE sigh of relief for me! The production of my exhaust was complete before the earthquake hit. Fujitsubo, luckily, is only suffering from electrical outages at this point, but it sounds like production has halted. Fujitsubo is still shipping, so my exhaust should be here mid-late April! Waaahoooooooooo!

In relocating my battery, the CRX doesn't leave too many options. I've decided to mount it in the "trunk," tucked in the nook on the very back passenger's side.
Because I didn't want to have to deal with finding a sealed battery box, I'm just going to go with the yellow-top Optima, which they make sealed. (Obviously, I don't want any crazy gases in my cabin... This is my daily driver.)

I'm using this tie down. This all seems like an easy solution. :

Finally a little progress...

I've been waiting on sooo many back ordered parts. One has been installed...

Still waiting on my exhaust from Fujitsubo Japan. I ordered it a while ago, and the final word was that it would be here by mid May. I'm getting very impatient! This exhaust soooo better be worth the wait!

My little sister's vehicle recently blew up, and no one else in my family could afford to help her out. So, I bit my lip, got some work done on my 'lude, and out the door she went. My little sister is now the proud owner of a JDM H22A Prelude! Who's the best big sister ever? (My wonderful mother insisted on wrapping it! haha)

The CRX got picked up from paint on Monday, 4/25/11! :D This body shop does an amazing job, but they took their sweet time with the shave and paint, so it ended up being three weeks as opposed to the 2 tops that it should've been.

Phoenix Yellow, FTW!

Now that she’s back from paint, building will commence! :D

ha. It's just sitting, there, actually. It's a specific clutch cable for this build, so it fits perfectly.
