Default k20 type s tranny problem (pics inside)

So girlfriend was driving her car suddenly she heard a sound. She continued to drive it home about 4 blocks. I test drive it around the block and heard the sound as well, Sounded like a bearing problem. Pulled the tranny and opened it up. Found that one of the two bolts that hold down the bearing on the counter shaft side had unthreaded itself and caused some damage to the tranny. So is this tranny still usable? I will be taking apart the shafts and cleaning/inspecting/lubing, and replacing all bearings. My only concern at this point is the damage to what I am assuming is an oil galley. Should I try to get the pieces welded back, or just smooth/polish it out with a dremel and reassemble. Any insight is appreciated.

What else did that bolt make contact with? May have damaged teeth on the gears throughout the transmission. How did the gears stacks look?? If all the gears are fine and everything checks out its a perfect time for a rebuild! The oil galleys are important but you didn't break a major chunk of them and I think you may be able to get by. If you dont feel comfortable then have them repaired or replace the case. I would replace the case but, I am more on the perfectionist side. So your call on that one.

The case should be okay with a little smoothing out but you should look closely at the gears to be sure there are no chipped teeth.

So do you guys think I should disassemble the gear stacks to clean and inspect? Or just change the bearings and call it good? In case you haven't realized, I'm very new to transmission work. But I do have the factory service manual, and can read/comprehend the steps that need to be completed, all gears and sychro's look okay.

I would disassemble, clean, and inspect everything.

Disassemble everything. Clean and inspect it all. Make sure the oiling ports of the shafts have no random debris (unrelated even to the damage pictured) in them.

Check for damage to the gears, ect. If all is well,re-assemble with new bearings and the bolts and plate that hold the counter shaft bearing. Should be just fine.

Loctite it....
