quick question. Type R wing. is it functional?
it is. forgot who, but someone here said leave the trunk ajar, and drive it over 40 or something and the trunk light will turn off
I feel a lot of downforce near 80 on the rear of the car, but Rob has never driven with the wing off yet so He's talking outta his ***.

Yes it is! I tried the same test with my SI(leaving the trunk ajar and going for a drive). At about 60 - 65 MPH the downforce closed the trunk lid!

It would close without the wing, too. The truth is that no one knows if is functional for sure. I've gone wingless, and I couldn't tell the difference.
I remember reading an article a while back that said that it was used to correct the balance of lift between the front and back. Damned if I remember where I saw the article, though. It was over a year ago.
But if you really wanna know for sure if it's functional, just ask yourself a question: did Honda put anything on the ITR that's just for show? (OK, besides the red stickers and badges.

Many people know "for sure" that it is functional.
No one here has tested to see exactly how much downforce the wing provides, and no one here has witnessed its performance in a wind tunnel. Some people say it "feels" like it helps, and others say it does not. Not really knowing anyone here, I like facts and first hand knowledge.

Jason-
who went two sessions wingless, and knows the purpose of his spoiler.
Someone sent me the Acura technical bulletin that went out to dealerships in Feb. '97 to help them get ready to sell the Type Rs. I can post it if anyone cares, but here's what Honda/Acura CLAIMS about the ITR wing:
"the wing-type rear spoiler that help to reduce the lift co-effieicent at highway speeds by 30% (and drag by 1%)"
For what it's worth...
