What would you do? Vin question.
Alright so i bought my CRX back in November of '10. 3 days ago, while i was at my aunts house, my cousin happened to notice that the vin on the dash is different from the vin on the fire-wall. I looked at my registration and it has the vin from the dash.
I went home and checked up on both of them from the FREE carfax thing where it only gives me a VERY limited amount of info. So, anyways, my body is a '89 crx si, and the car the dash came out of is an '88 crx si.
Here's a few interesting details and what i suspect happened:
When i open the hood of my car it's red.
The exterior is blue.
The vin from the dash matches the car the plates came off of.
The crx that this dash came out of, is blue.
I think something happened to the other crx, they took a lot off it and stuck it on this one, spray painted it blue to make it look like the same car, stuck the plates and dash in this one to make it look legit, then sold it asap. <~ Is doing this LEGAL or ILLEGAL?
I called the DMV and gave them the vin off the fire-wall and they said that it's not stolen. So i dunno, what do u guys think, should i continue driving it or what?

Danked, if both VIN numbers are not reported stolen, then continue to drive the vehicle. Two possibilities exist: either the vehicle was in a front end collision, thus a body shop or owner replaced the front clip, or someone simply swapped dashes. Which VIN does the registration/title match? If the match is the firewall, the latter possibility (which I suspect) is the case. Hope this helps.

If you feel the desire to investigate further, then run the firewall VIN. You may discover it is clear, then again, you may have the opportunity to bust a thief and lose your ride all in the same day. However, I cannot decide that ethical qualm for you.

2. you give retarded advise.
If some thing ever happened to this car where it was impounded you may not get it back. Swapping a dash and license plates from one car onto another to sell it are NOT legal. If it were me I would go after the person you bought it from. If your car (firewall VIN) is not a stolen car it could be as simple as getting a bill of sale from the previous owner.
Don't weld a ******* plate over the VIN that would be about the dumbest thing you could do. Look at it from a cops perspective, its a Honda and the dash and plates don't match the firewall VIN.......not a good situation to try and explain. Regardless of who did it YOU are the one who is in possession of it and thats all a cop will see.
If the title does not match the firewall VIN, but the vehicle is legit, then seeking out the owner who possesses the proper title would be the best option, but an option that costs money in regard to the DMV correction of the title and registration. I fail to see how that is retarded advice. And the second answer was simply a facetious response. And as the vehicle owner seems apt to torch a shell in the local field, I hardly understand your basis for flaming me. But any time you feel like chiming in with your genius answers, feel free to do so sweetheart.

2. When i called the DMV and gave her the vin off the firewall, she asked me "what color is the car?" i said "blue" then she said "well its supposed to be red and it hasn't been tabbed since '08"
3. I forgot to mention that when i put the vin on carfax it said there's a seat-belt recall for this frame. Maybe he couldn't legally get it inspected or some ****.
EDIT:: and 4. I don't think any of your responses are retarded. I honor and respect them all. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated and i'd like to thank each and every one of you for your commitment.
We're all here because we love our honda's. Don't be mean, let's all get along!
Call the Sherriff's dept.
Tell them you're looking to buy this car, but you noticed the VIN on the firewall and dash don't match so you would like to see if they'd run them both.
If one of them comes back stolen, you're F'd. (Chances are this would be the firewall VIN, if at all - either way, the car is still registered illegally).
Call the previous owner and say "Listen buddy, you need to come pick this f'in car up and give me my money back or I'm reporting you as selling me a car that has been either stolen or illegally registered.
Don't just drive the car and expect nothing to happen. One traffic stop and an officer that actually does his job and this is all going to be on your plate with nothing you can do about it, especially now since you know about the potential issues.
FWIW, I dont think the DMV can tell you if the car was stolen. From what I'd imagine this car was stolen and "VIN swapped" so someone could make a quick buck...

Regarding seat belt inspection, that is the responsibility of the consumer. The DMV nor officers keep a record of who handled recalls when and where.
And I couldn't agree more with getting along - I don't think there is ever a reason to flame someone, but rather to guide incorrect statements so that knowledge is passed.
plain and simple you need to find the title that matches your firewall/ door jam vin, and register it in your name. how you didn't notice this when you bought the car idk but it sounds like two cars were made into one, or your car had a lost title and some one wrecked their crx and swapped the dash into your car and scammed you. junk yards turn the titles into dmv so it would not be possible for you to have a legitimately registered car with the vin from a junk yard car
