Default 5th gear grinds after full rebuild.

Hey guys, I've got about 1,500 miles on my rebuilt trans, we put an m factory lsd in it, and did a full Gearspeed trans rebuild kit.

At first all the gears were a bit notchy, but after some miles it's smooth, shifting into 5th is also smooth. but if i'm above ~100mph in 4th gear and shift into 5th right after there's a small grind. The rpm's are dropping to where it's easier to grind 5th. When I get down to tear the case off the trans what should I look into? Did something not seat right or is something possibly tweaked? It's all brand new, so replacing the sync i don't think will fix the problem.

So where should I start?

5th hub and sleeve new?
If not, did you ONLY replace the sleeve?
How bad was the hub?
Did you reuse old 5th gear hub and sleeve and not orient them in their original slot?

What's 5th gear engagement teeth look like?

How many low rpm/low speed shifts did you do into 5th before really ragging on it?

Possible damaged/warped new synchro ring. Did you drop it or something prior to install?

5th hub and sleeve new?---- Only sleeve is new, Hubs are a tad hard to find. aren't they?

If not, did you ONLY replace the sleeve? -- Yes, only sleeve and sync was replaced, 5th gear never did this before the rebuild.

How bad was the hub? -- it was our first trans to tear apart, We checked everything out and everytime didn't seem to look ate up

Did you reuse old 5th gear hub and sleeve and not orient them in their original slot? --We used the original 5 gear hub, we used a new sleeve and sync

What's 5th gear engagement teeth look like? -- It's been a few months

How many low rpm/low speed shifts did you do into 5th before really ragging on it? --- Since the trans was really notchy at first I took it easy for about 500 miles, then started given er' hell.

Possible damaged/warped new synchro ring. Did you drop it or something prior to install? -- nothing was dropped to my knowledge

Haha. No biggie, dude. It's readable.

Well, without having the trans torn down in front of me to look at it person, from what you've mentioned, I'd have to suggest a problem with the used hub and possibly the 5th gear engagement teeth/gear cone.

It's something that no one online is probably going to be able to just diagnose unfortunately - it's like internet tuning via email and datalogging. There are things that the tuner themselves simply can't see without the car present. So you'll just have to get back in there and find out - and of course, report back with your findings.

Right on, i'll tear her apart when I buy a new clutch, I'll just rebump this thread.

I wasn't there for the most parts of my buddy tearing my trans apart, would you be able to hold my hand through most of it?

Sooo, tore the trans apart today. Took off the bearing, and pulled the 5th gear set off, sanded the part where the 5th gear synchro sits in, the little cone that rides on the inside of the sync so hopefully that helps. and sanded the hub down a little, where I think the HUB sits there was a part that was a little burndt that we sanded down too..

Anywho, before we tore the trans down I noticed when i got out of 5th gear and went into the neutral slot, it catches on something and the shifter won't automatically line up with the 3rd-4th slot, you'd have to give the shifter a small nudge so the shifter lines up where it's supposed to.. what could cause this? make sense?
