my guess is you drained everything before you pulled the pan so its gonna need around 5 qts of oil so check the oil level! then clean out the vtec solinoid with carb cleaner and replace the gaskets while your at it it might be cloging.

Hey im a newbie but i had a question and cant post a thread yet. I'm no mechanic but i was wondering if anyone knows why my VTEC is not working. My friend just helped me swap a JDM B18C ITR Motor 97 spec swap with JDM ITR ECU into my 94 GSR but i keep getting an engine check light. My friend said that because of the engine check light going on, this is why my VTEC doesnt work. We cant figure out why the engine check light goes on and or why VTEC doesnt work. The engine check light does not come on when the car is started but then it turns on once i start driving. Can anyone help or give me any troubleshooting tips? thanks!

Your explanation is entirely too open to error. You just swapped an engine and computer into your car, the CEL could be for anything. Certain error codes in the ecu will cause vtec to not operate. Look up how to read ECU flash codes and find out whats causing the code. Fix that and you may fix your "vtec yo"

vtec will not engage if oil is too low

Yup!
You changed the oil, you probably didn't put enough in. Just think about the problem here, everything worked, then you said you just changed the oil, then everything didn't work.... See where I'm going with this?

There is also a sticky which will help you troubleshoot this, please refer to that first!

If your Vtec isn't engaging due to the oil pressure being too low you have bigger problems than getting vtec to engage.
