Could be a timing belt too.

And $380 for a cap and coil?!!!!!!!!!! WTF?! You can get a whole new distributor with those in it for about $150!

1998 170+ miles

I have fuel to the filter - going to replace it. Acts like it wants to start but is not getting fuel.

Could it be electrical?

timing belt or ICM took a ****, try to find a good working distributor.

also, when you crank it does it spin really fast? or does it sound normal

could also be a dirty ignition switch. check plugs and wire, coil, main relay and gas.

mine turned over also. just sounded fuel starved. but sure enough it was the distributor. and yes $380 was absolutely ridiculous. everyone i talked with said its extremely rare to be a fuel issue.

Take the valve cover off,
-take the top outer timing belt cover off,
-check to see if the timing belt has tension on both sides,
-if it does then put the valve cover back on keeping the timing cover off
-have someone crank the engine and see if the cams are moving while the engine is cranking. I have had a timing belt just strip a bunch of teeth off at the crank pulley and still have tension up top. If the cams move then your belt should be ok.

If you think it is a fuel issue then spray a little bit of starting fluid inside the throttle body and see if she fires. If it does then you have a fuel issue somewhere(not very likely though)

You are probably going to end up either replacing a timing belt or a distributor. One of those is most likely your culprit.

I guess thats the mileage they go at cuz mine went at 180 and it was a 97. Did the same changed coil, rotor and cap and she started right up. Only hard part was that a honda tech had jammed the rotor on backwards dont know how but they managed to put it in the wrong way and give it back to my wife a yr ago.

I have a UK spec 1997 CRV 2.0 auto.. Cut out and wont start.
No spark, fuel primes up so not mump, changed ditributor and still no spark.

Checked wires from ECU to distributor plug for shorting to ground and for contenuity. ALL ok. checked for power feeds to ECU at IGN on and cranking, all again seem to be fine with little voltage drop. Orange engine light come on and goes off as normal.

Im now thinking ECU ??? dont think its got a chipped key . Does have honda remote fob which stopped working about a year ago.

My local Honda agent hasnt been much help.

So you Honda Tech's what do you make of that ??

Model RD1
Engine is a B20B
Distributor is TD97U
ECU 37820 - P3F - G51

Cheers guys..

Dave.. ( standing by to set light to it !! )

My 2000 CRV w/135k died also. It happened last week on my way home on the interstate I heard a noise like a hose under pressure let go- then had no power. I coasted to the shoulder and had the V towed to my driveway. If I bump it it turns the rotor in the distributor that means the belt is still connected correct? While I was doing this I did hear a not so comforting sound of something making some type of contact! So I stopped and am now wondering if it may be a burnt valve or maybe jumped timing, I am also wondering if I may have bent some valves or caused myself more damage doing this step in trouble shooting.

I am mechanically inclined an can turn a wrench, but this is my first time dealing with internal engine issues - if this is what it ends up being? Any help an direction will be Greatly Appreciated!!!!

If I have to tear into the engine, I would be interested in building up a B20Z V-Tec combo?

If it already jumped timing while driving under load damage was already likely before you spun it over. You could have belt teeth damage however. You will have to remove covers(valve, plastic cover and put the crank on tdc (0 degrees) a mirror can help, line up cam marks on both cams. If the distributorYou can rotate crankshaft in neutral to also inspect timing belt.If the belt is original it's due as is waterpump. If you have belt is damaged you can take a feeler cage to check for valve damage by looking for valve excess clearance. Good luck
