Rough Takeoff - Help
1990 Honda Accord EX - Automatic
Recent tune-up 3/2011: Plugs, Wires, Cap and Rotor, Fuel Filter, Oil & Filter, new EGR Valve
Car has no ***** and little power and feels like it shakes on the takeoff from 800-1900 RPM. After 2000 RPM it is fine!
I unplugged the EGR connector and it runs perfect but the CEL comes on while driving and throws a code 12. (EGR duh!)
I plug in the EGR connector back in and it runs shitty and the CEL is not on (Go figure!)
Also failed emission for high NOX 11/2010. with 1186 PPM and only 549 PPM is allowed.
I have recently been awarded CAP assistance ($500) from the state, so I will be taking it in to a Gold Shield station, only thing I'm worried about is them telling me it's going to be more than $500 to fix it, which means I will pay everything after the initial $500
I am leaning toward the EGR ports all being plugged really bad. Would this be the problem? and if so would it cost more than $500 to clean them out because I'm not going to attempt that hard project ever again due to screwing up my last intake manifold pretty bad!!!!!
Help Please!!!

can of seafoam should fix ur probs. even taking off intake manifold and spray all ports out with carb cleaner exspecially egr port, replace then run seafoam and that should do u good
I got the EGR ports cleaned out for $130.00 which isnt bad price because that is a really hard job to do with no room for error. Now the rough takeoff is gone! and it passed smog too!
I guess there is no way to prevent egr ports from clogging up but Im going to get them cleaned out before smog in 2013

Or a can of SeaFoam every six months or so (4 cans X $7 = $28 which is < $130)....I try to make sure I do this every six months or so on mine. Personally the 2/3 thru the vac line keep it clean, then the 1/3 in the tank help the mpg's for that tank @ 1~3 mpg. Worth it IMO...let the debates and flaming begin. Yes I know the ports take more than two years to get to that point, preventive maintenance
I think thats a really good idea with the Seafoam, but I have never tried it. I know it usually works, but I think I would get flamed by my neighbors when it smokes so much. I need to find a place I can do it without looky loos and complainers! But it would probably save me much money if i did it this way. I'm just too chicken **** to actually take out the port plugs! I was thinking of going to the junkyard to buy a beater intake manifold and just practice taking them out without screwing up, if I do it a couple of times maybe I could master it.
