b16 vs gsr trans
debating what trans i should go with and would like to know the performance differance from a gsr trans to a b16 trans. and are the axels interchangeable bewtween the two trans?
well i have a b20v setup which should give me the torque i need so the smaller ratio would aid on with the more torque from the b20 bottom end and gsr head, right?
If you really want to make this work well, have a bit 'o nerd in you, and have an idea of where the power band in your car is, then try this exercise:
Look up the gear ratios for your transmission here: http://www.ff-squad.com/tech/temp/Bgears.htm
Next, get your tire size handy (e.g. 195/50 15)...
Finally, use this website and it will tell you speed for a given RPM: http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/revs.html
The goal would depend on you... for example, you want to cruise in the sweet spot of your powerband (5th?) See which transmission gets your cruise at 60 or 70 closest to the RPMs you want.
Want to be sure you are shifting into the powerband for fast acceleration? Then, when you hit the shift point in the lower gear and shift from (say) 3rd to 4th, what RPM does that leave you at? Is that RPM still in the powerband after the shift?
The higher RPM's probably make acceleration snappy at the expense of gas mileage.
With a long-stroked and torquey engine like you have, if you do mostly daily driving, you might like gearing that keeps RPMS a hair lower - it would use that torque to wind up quickly, leave your top speed up higher, and give you decent mileage while cruising.
Have fun,
Mark

no actual noticed difference between the gsr and b16 gears with mileage. the b16 gears have a better ratio set and mph can be set with different final drives. it's not bad with a 4:40, if a 4:10 or 3:83 FD is available you could up the mph and lower the rpms a bit. the worst part about a gsr transmission is the 1-2 shift is so wide. if it had a taller 1st gear it would be a great transmission as well
With the b20v you got some torque and top end why don't you go with an ls trans.. The torque will pull you through the gear and the top end will have some fun with the longer ratios
so far haven't found an ls trans. at the moment all i found is a b16. if nothing shows up soon i guess im going to have to go with the b16. really trying to get this swap done asap. just waiting on my chipped ecu from phearable to be sent to my house
Where in chicago are you cause i know in aurora theres 2 junk yards right next to eachother u-pull it and city auto wreckers I'm sure out of those you'd find one.. Theres also a bunch closer to chicago you should look around
trying to find one but at the moment i can only find a b16. I have driven a crx high comp with a b16 trans and i loved the fast acceleration hitting the on ramp and highway runs. But if a gsr does come up that's something i would really want.

I'd go with a B16 trans hands down. The gas mileage difference is MAYBE 1mpg...probably not even that much.
For example, according to Edumnds:
EM1 gas mileage: 26/31
GSR gas mileage: 26/31
ITR gas mileage: 25/30
The ITR has about the same gearing as the EM1. I've owned 3 GSRs and I currently have a ITR and EM1 that used to have the stock B16A2 and now has a 00 spec ITR swap. The gas mileage difference is nothing measurable.
I don't really care about sitting at 4-5k on the highway. I've gotten used to it. My drive is a LOT of highway since I go to school like an hour away and commute. You barely know the car is sitting at 4-5k RPM.
For the performance difference, I'd definitely do a B16 trans.

lol you're not going to find that stuff at either one of those places. I was just at U-pull it today. No integras at all. There's never been a DOHC VTEC civic/integra there with a motor or trans in it...ever. I've seen a few EM1s and DC2s there...I even got my 5 lug, Si cluster, Carbing cooling plate, CTR boot, etc. etc. off an EM1. Got two 22mm ITR rear sway bars...and a buncha other unbelieveable stuff. But never seen one with an engine or trans.

...but yeah i'm meeting up with a guy to check out this b16 he's selling. planning on picking it up tomorrow :-D
