Default Ball Bearing failure on LSD ...... why??!!!

Hello guys, got some weird problems with my B16 S4C tranny with OBX diff. My car is a boosted EM1 with about 500whp. Was gonna bring down the tranny to change clutch and when I take out the shaft, the seal came right off and small metal pieces started to drop. When I look into the diff the bearing is missing some of the *****. I dont know what could have caused this. I installed the LSD with OEM bearings. The bearing on one side has closed and one open. I took the closed side and took off the metal face to give it more lubrication. I installed the bearings just taping them on each side lightly until they come down. Car ran about a year or so before this happened.

Am I doing something wrong on the installation or is opening both sides of the bearing bad? Are there any clearance settings Im overlooking? Any help would be appreciated.

There you have it. If you didn't check it, given that it's an OBX unit, we have to assume the diff wasn't within an allowable range for runout.

What did you set the diff bearing thrust clearance to upon initial installation btw?

No I didnt. 1st time using a LSD. How do you check that and make the corrections needed? Can u point me in the right direction? (Right now reading through some old threads you explain that.)

1. It's an OBX, they have horrible runout which will eat up diff bearings.

2. If it wasn't shimmed correctly, that will also eat up diff bearings.

Correct procedure to shim is in the Helms. I'd suggest at least checking the runout of the LSD first, if not just replace it with a higher quality LSD.
