Hi. This is my first post here. I have a 1994 Civic 4-door straight shift I got from my brother a couple of years ago. When I was pulling out of my driveway yesterday, I heard a clunk. I immediately turned off the car, got out (I was by the curb), and saw the muffler dangling against the ground. The hooks had come loose from the rubber bushings that it had been hanging from, but nothing looks broken.

My wife and I tried to reattach the hooks, but they don't appear to REACH the bushings! I don't know how this is possible, as it was hanging up until yesterday. So I got a two bungie cords, and rigged up a temporary solution. Here is a picture of my kludge:

You can see that I managed to get one of the pegs (on the right) just barely sitting in the bushing, but the other one (obstructed by the cords) just will not reach. Even if it would, it seems like it would pull out again rather easily.

I noticed that the muffler in the Haynes manual diagram has hooks that curve back towards the front of the vehicle, whereas mine come straight off the muffler pointing towards the back. I'm wondering if mine got bent, or if there are variations. Anyone had this problem before?

 

Doesn't look like the right muffler, but I haven't owned a EG sedan in a few years. That's probably why it finally pulled itself free, the pegs on the muffler should pretty much be right underneath the pegs on the body. And they do point back towards the back of the car from the factory.
Are any of the exhaust system pipes hitting the body, especially towards the s bend in the pipe?

The tip looks really long. I don't think that is the factory muffler that is supposed to be on the car. Bring it to a muffler shop and have them check it out.

I figured a muffler shop is going to try and sell me a new muffler, but it was obviously fine before. But I guess it wasn't fine, though, since it fell I was hoping I was just missing something simple.

 

I will go check and get back with you (as it is in the parking lot at work with me right now).

Edit: The exhaust pipe follows the counter of the undercarriage and doesn't seem to be touching. This pic was taken from just in front of the back-right tire, aimed towards the back. You can see where the muffler bolts to the pipe. Nothing looks bent or off-kilter to me:

 

I ran across basically the same thing on my 99 civic lx. I just spent the $100 and ordered a new muffler from Honda and installed it myself.

A muffler shop can do it for you as well with some no name muffler, but I am picky about what I put on my cars.

 

It's an aftermarket muffler, when it hit the ground it may have pushed the exhaust somewhere when it hit the ground shortening the overall length of pipe. Sometimes getting the pins in the rubber hangers is just plain dirty.

 

I'm not sure I understand. How could it shorten the length? Does the muffler pipe push up into the exhaust pipe it's bolted to?

 

i really dont think you have the right exhaust on there because ive had 2 egs and the minute i replaced the mufflers with an ITR exhaust this bullsh*t happened.... and it scraped my exhaust(i nearly cried lol)

 

lol u almost CRIED over a STOCK itr exhaust??

 

thats doesn't look oem, even with and oem exhaust those hanger are tuff to get on, you have to push up and wedge your hand up there its a tight fit

PS an OEM catback for my 93si hatch was around 300 from the dealer, you can get a Walker replacement bolt on cat back for about 240-250

 

It's not that bad to get an OEM replacement and take the guess work out of it fitting. $140+shipping from Honda.

PS: OEM 93 Civic SI muffler section is $130+shipping, from Honda.

 

Sometimes the front hangers will bend when the muffler hits the ground and digs in. Or the pipe will bend or collapse.

For the extra $50 i'd buy the OEM version, although in some cases Walker made exhausts for honda, usually '92 - '95 were made by Sankei though.

 

I just ordered one from Honda for my 99 Civic Lx and 92 Civic Si 6 months ago, both together including shipping didn't cost me $300.

 

lol I went oem on my hatch, I probably the only A hole on this site that spent 300 on an OEM exhaust

PS just the axle back is about 140ish I also got the mid pipe thats why it was about 300

 

Nope, I spent around that shipped for an OEM exhaust on my 92 EH3, and with the mid pipe, that's around right shipped.

 

same deal here put on on my 93 si, were you able to reuse your tip or did you get nailed for another 30 like I did

 

For the $30, I said Eff it and went without it...haha

 

its JDM y0, it comes with a nice made in Japan sticker

I am just glad was still able to get 17 year old parts, nothing fits like OEM

I'll bet you have a coupe/hatch muffler on there instead of a 4dr one get one for a 4 dr

 

Nope. It's a sedan muffler, actually coupe/sedan are the same, hatch is different and it has a really short tailpipe, like about 4" or so.

 

I beg to differ I put a sedan muffler on my coupe and it was inches longer at the hangar points causing my muffler to be up against the car body and the bushings pushed rearward to the max

 

One of them was either aftermarket or altered then, and/or your midpipe was modified. They are the same muffler.
