Default Can I weld this flange to a cast iron turbo mani?

Long story short I'm taking my greddy 18G and making it external wastegate I currently have the single cam edelbrock log manifold and would like to know if its possible to weld this v band flange to it or even a 2 bolt flange to it, given that the manifold is cast iron I believe there is some issue with this, so i figured i'd ask the pro's

thanx in advance guys!

pre heat it. using silicon bronze for welding to the cast manifold, put it in the oven and step it down in heat to cool.

i personally won't be doing the welding, its going to be getting dropped off to a place that can. I just wanted to make sure its possible before purchasing the vband.

Didn't know this stuff was any good for turbo stuff. Most alloys melt at around 1000 C, and this filler is weak on a good day. You just put a huge fillet on there or what?

yea this v band stainless steel is all good for boosted setups. I just want to make sure i'm going to be able to make this work...also the runners on this manifold are kind of small..

Scrap that silicone bronze wire and instead use this.

Inconel 625 when welding on cast iron. (beware it is like 50$ a lb)

I have never had a single weld failure to date and I have welded TONS of hydraulic rams, pressure vessels, turbine housings, factory headers, blocks, etc.

If you are worried about it cooling to fast, keep a bucket full of sand or kitty litter near by. When done welding drop it in bucket and cover with the sand/kitty litter. This will make it cool much slower.

for the time and effort i would just get a real manifold.

Friend of mine did this for me, the weld eventually failed but after about 3 years.

Got sick of messing around with broken DP bolts so had him seal up the internal wg port and 2.5 - 3" flare with V band for the DP lol

does the manifold have a wastegate port on it? if not make sure the fabricator spaces the vband away from the manifold so he/she can weld in a wastegate port, and depending on the material that port should be as close to the collector as possible... even if its butting right next to the original exhaust flange.

well as you can see in this pic, edelbrock manifolds utilize turbos that have built in waste gates (much like factory Evo's and other DSM's)...

so that means you have to add a port to it somehow for the external gate you are wanting to add. like this:

however, it would be kinda difficult to add a port to it being a cast manifold, and since you are adding a vband housing to it anyway, just space the vband away from the collector a couple inches with some stainless tubing, and add your wastegate port in that tubing. kinda like this where the waste gate is in the collector (or in your case that tubing to space out the vband):

I was under the impression the vband was for the external wastegate, not the turbo... Maybe I missed something.

Default My $0.02.

I usually use "super missile weld" on steel flanges to cast parts such as turbo manifolds/turbine hsgs/etc. It works very well and is relatively easy to tig.
