2002 Honda Accord EX flood damage project
Just bought a 2002 Accord EX that was in a flood. Current condition:
Pro's...
Here are some wild cards:
Here is what I have done so far:
Here are some things I am considering to be problem areas:
Comments Anyone?
Pro's...
- Runs
- Starts when above freezing
- Won't start when below freezing
- All the power windows wont work, no power to them
- Horn wont work, no power to it
- When motor warms up the idle pulsates
- Turn signals don't work
Here are some wild cards:
- Sometimes when you turn on the for ways they work, just for a couple of seconds
Here is what I have done so far:
- Changed all standard fuses in the fuse box
Here are some things I am considering to be problem areas:
- PCV valve: http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/H...acement-Guide/
- EFI Main Relay? http://techauto.awardspace.com/mainrelaydefine.html
- Starter? Some said that the no-start-when-freezing could simply be the starter...
Comments Anyone?
^^^ Same, Plus put back together, Check electrical continuity to the components and replace where needed.
Made me wanna know how deep this flood was now
or seller not tell ?

Thanks Guys, I will to dry out the signal relay and see if that helps that problem. Not sure, it came from a warehouse and nobody seemed to know, good news is that it probably didn't set in the water for long because there wasn't a water line.
Bad news is that the trunk had water in it so it was reasonably high. I do wonder if maybe the back of the car was submerged deeper than the rest of the car because there isn't even a hint of the typical "musty" water smell that most flooded car interiors have.
Interesting project, just hope I don't get screwed too badly
$3400 for a 2002 EX with 133K miles, good deal or bad?

No, just picked up the car, thanks for the list! I'll plan on flushing those ASAP, good call

Any relays and such that you suspect is wet or has moisture inside then just put then in a zip-loc bag with white rice and seal it. White rice will dry everything out.
Update: Found several relay's were corroded and not working, but the real problem here seems to be the ECU or main computer which is located under the radio, hidden behind the carpet, fastened to the floor.
When I opened the ECU some of the connections were clearly rusted through and others heavily corroded

The auto parts store told me that my ECU would not need to be "flashed" or programmed in order to work, they were wrong, I think. The company I bought the honda ECU from said that it would need to be programmed.
oh, and here is a cool resource: http://www.hondapartsnow.com/Page_Pr...(Engine%20Room)

#1: I would never have bought that car with the mileage and tranny issues they are known for, especially flooded.
#2: there is a member on 6thgenaccord.com who is selling a 01 Automatic tranny ECU for $20. Cant tell from his part# on the ECU if it is V6 or 4 cylinder
He is a well-respected good member and will not screw you over. I have bought a couple parts from him and he is legit.

#3: Take out the immobilizer chip and you'll save some $$$.

Interesting, thanks for the links! This seems to be an all inclusive list of issues that this model has: http://consumerguideauto.howstuffwor...a-accord-2.htm
I'm not really to worried about the transmission, I have a '01 civic that is also tagged under the "problem era" but it has been amazing.
I had a '97 accord before this, and I sold it with 260,000+ miles and it was still going strong so needless to say, I'm pretty confident in accords

Horrible purchase IMO for that price, that mileage for a flood vehicle.
This is not like your Civic with the 'problem era' this is a known problem that happens to well treated Accords, ignoring the fact your transmission sat in water.
Personally? I'd buy a parts Accord and swap all the wiring harness from it. Who knows what the condition of them are. I'd also be removing the carpet and looking for mold.

Final problem remaining is still the uneven idle when the motor is warm. I am thinking that it is the EGR valve: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-accord-1990-2002-2/where-egr-valve-located-2467697/
??? Any thoughts? Found this thread to support my idea as well... http://www.hondaaccordforum.com/foru...ustment-38003/

I appreciate the sarcasm, but I don't consider 'MSN Autos' exactly the information-mecca for Honda Accord V6 transmissions - and even they have a big fat red X over it..........
By all means enjoy your purchase but I wouldn't be surprised when your find the transmission is ****ed.

And there are a **** ton of threads regarding fluctuating idles. I would suggest you use the Advanced Search in the Accord section. There is more than sufficient FAQ and solution threads.
Edit
As a side note as well....I'm not sure how MSN Autos pulled the KBB value because KBB says otherwise. And your car were honestly be rated 'Poor' due to the flooding - wiring ruined, ECU ruined, etc
