If they work in your car and not his then the clusters are not the issue.

Trace the tach lead wire, sounds like a wiring issue.

maybe his speed sensor is bad.. or you plugged it in wrong... there shouldnt be any wiring issue being as you dont have to wire anything to swap clusters.. just plug it in..

^^ I don't think you can plug it in wrong.
Pretty sure it only goes one way....

All 96-00 civic's are wired for tachs.... this is a wireing issue.

Does everything else work on the cluster?

only way it is a wiring issue is if they messed with the factory wiring.. if not than the speed sensor isnt working or something else.. and i thought 2 of the plugs were very similar and could be mixed up, been a while since ive been behind a cluster to look...

They are different pin counts, IIRC they are all pre wired for tach's. But if the tach signal wire is messed up, they wouldn't get a signal.

Honestly, that is kind of a gues, it has been a while sence I pulled my cluster out.

I am fairly sure they are different.

I could pop my cluster to be sure if anyone cares...

The 2 I am thinking about are very similar, wether they can be swapped I would would have to check to be 100%

You really can't hook up a cluster wrong in a 96-00 Civic and the tach should be plug and play. If the speed sensor were bad, you'd probably be having issues with your speedometer, etc. Trace the tach wiring. Anyone know how the tachs work, are they just sensitive to speed/gear or do they actually count the revs somehow?

its actually going into a 95 dx hatch. and yes everything else is working. its not the first time i've swapped a cluster before, thats why i'm confused on why its not working.

You should have stated that in the first post. But we also should have asked you.

I honestly have no clue, and can't really help you. Other than you need to check the wire
