Japan all wheel drive for civic. Any interest.
Hello,
Not all to familiar with honda's but was told at a different forum that it might be better here for what I'm looking to do. I have a brother in Japan and he has the ability to get the whole drive train and other parts needed to swap the all wheel drive system into a civic.
This sounds interesting to me as I'm a Audi and VW guy. I have no issues with Honda's so don't go bashing me.
What I'm looking for really is if this is something that would be of intrest to anyone else.
My brother imports material to Japan for his wifes family buisness so getting the parts here isn't an issue.
Cost is one of the thing's that is prohibitive at this time so I'm just looking to see if this would be worth pursuing.

I'm thinking of bringing over possibly 5 or 6 depending on how much they are to begin with. I would like to keep one for myself and sell the rest depending on interest from the Honda community.
Not as straight forward as it is when swapping on VW/Audi where all you need is the components, swap, done. They are easy to do on the VW from what I've read up as I've been looking at it on my MKV GLI. However to do this on a Honda it requires serious modification as the rear stamping of the trunk area is completely different as well as the welded in rear subframe is different. The tunnel for the driveshaft would also need modification as now you have the driveshaft and exhaust running through it. It's a bit more involved then I believe you think.
That is some of what my brother is trying to find out. He is here in the states for a couple more day's and then goes back to Japan. He worked at a Honda dealership for about 8 years so he knows more about them than I do.
He has the impression that the stampings are the same up until about 2000 and that is when they started changing them to not have the tunnel to be able to run the drive shaft threw. He's going to send me some pictures of the floor pans when he get's back. Then I'll have a better idea of how this would work. Thanks for the info.
As far as I know my brother says from a civic that's about all I know for now. I'll get more info when he's back in Japan.

Trust me I've looked into it and we had a discussion about it before. The Jdm Ef sedans that were awd have a differt trunk stamping, fuel tank, subframe, etc etc. It'd be much easier to custom make the components than trying to cut and weld original pieces imo.

he's right. i have a friend who has an EF AWD but converted to 2wd. the rear is totally different. he can't even do a rear disc brake system conversion. you must really mod and hack at the car to make it work.
Well ok then I guess thats not going to work then. Thanks for the info about the rear floor pan. Still seems like it would be fun if you were going for a highly moded motor. That way you could use it.
yea.. would be interesting but too much work needed to be done.. the rigidity of the whole car would be questionable after that..
