98 Honda prelude having a weird dying problem
So I'm kinda new at all this so i thought i would as the Experts. I have a 98' Honda Prelude, Type SH Or SI (cant remember ATM) 2.2 L H22a4 VTEC. I start the care and let it idle for about 5 mins and out of nowhere the car just dies as if the key was turned off...i bought the car yesterday from Eugene, OR and managed to make it all the way to K-Falls before this happened... it's even done it while driving...It does not even bog down anymore, it used to but not now. Just Immediate shut off...Any ideas?

Where do you idle at?
and Maybe theres a lot of oil in the motor lol. That cause my motor to die fast when i shut off my car.
Is your car making any sound ?

I idle at 800 fine, but the thing is the car could go fine for a while (30 mins) then Poof... The Diagnostic said something about an o2 Sensor while we were in Eugene...it ran fine there no problem but between Eugene and klamath There is the "Willamete Pass" that you have to go over that climbs and drops over 3000 Ft...would that be an issue?
Well, after some tinkering with 8dxHatchy8 (Friend of mine from around here) we discovered that when the car is cold it starts and runs fine, but when it gets to running temp or hotter it tends to die, or if you even shut the car off it wont start until the car has cooled down...The Ignition coil is cracked down the side and looking shitty and I'm not sure about the Ignition Control Module..Any thoughts?
So. I replaced the Ignition Coil, The Ignition Control Module, new wires, New EGR Valve..The last people who owned the car for some reason took out the plastic plug for the main relay and just jammed the wires in there..
I just joined this website and cannot believe what I have read so far.
IGNITION SWITCH IS A MAJOR PROBLEM ,,,,,,, YES IT IS!!
I didn't have any problems until I took it in and got the recall replaced. Now it has been a couple of years, well I will be driving any time any where and the car completely turns off!! On the freeways, on a winding road, in the middle of an intersection. Oh Yea! Totally Dangerous!!
Once it turned off, I would quickly turn the key back off and turn it back on, sometimes it works fast but other times it took more than a few attempts. So, I contact Honda and they tell me I will have to pay for the repair. They only fix recalls once and that is it. I cannot believe that I have to pay for fixing HONDAS MISTAKE!! I really thought it was a fuse or a relay or the battery, but after all this time and experience I have to say it CAN ONLY BE THE IGNITION SWITCH! My car finally has completely stopped working. I mean it turned off the other day when I was a few blocks from home and it just wouldn't turn back on! The started kicks over, but nothing else works. No lights no radio no interiour dash board lights.. The air controll unit shows a red light above the defrost button. That is it! So I am stuck!!
I took the igition switch out myself and now I have to figure out how to come up with the $200 for a new switch!! Totally makes me think twice about buy a honda agian!
Oh yea I own a 97-98 Prelude, I believe it is a 98 but sometimes the parts dept. gives me 97 parts instead...
Just because they are working at a dealership doesn't always mean they are experts!! My VTech boost stopped working when I took it in to get a new oil pan. Yea, and they did a valve ajustment and took all the power I did have. It totally drives worse than it did before they worked on it.!

might be the ignition switch, or it might be the distributor which has plagued many lude owners who never figured out the cause. i only heard of the issue after we (my friend and I) switched distributors accidently and all random stalls ceased.
Definately sounds like an ignition switch issue. These cars had a recall on them back in the day. You can take it to the dealer still and have them fix it because it's a fire hazard.
Just to confirm that this is the issue....have you ever been driving down the road and see the rpms kinda go crazy? As in go up a few rpms then down or the car just boom shut off? If so i'd definately look into getting that replaced.

i replaced the ignition switch....sadly...so that cant be it...Any further help would be much appreciated, thanks for the effort guys
i take my last comment back, i read a previous post wrong...i pulled the ignition switch and it looked BRAND NEW...Like Super Immaculate...But if you read my first post as i was saying that as i was coming down the Willamette pass that this is where the problem first occured, well i think it killed both my A/C fan and my radiator fan cause i grounded them and ran power straight to them and they wouldent work...My buddy and i noticed the main Relay was missing a plug, it was just a bunch of wires loose in the damn relay so we went and got a new plug out of the junk yard, hooked it up and now the fuel will not prime...please god someone help me...and from now on for every idea i get, if i try it and it works i will reward you...i need this car running properly
Check the main relay, someone said that before. The solder joints on the board go bad and when it heats up will create an open in the circuit. My car did it and i resoldered mine instead of buying a new one. On the other hand if the wires are messed with the car might have been hot wired and and there could be an open or a short in the harness. Look for anything that doesnt look stock.
So i guess i have the original Ignition switch in there, i thought it wasnt original due to the immaculate condition of it, but i set up an appt with cascade Honda to get my FREE Switch installed....ohhhhh yea baby
